90% in Germany! Wow! Hadn’t seen that number, where did you get it from? Somewhere in the forum here was an old discussion about comments by a German doc. His point was the diet and exercise (walking) routines of pipe smokers in Germany was such that many lived into their 80s and their deaths were old age and not cancer related. Good advice. Keep moving, and enjoy your life.

Filters aren’t about safety for me, it’s about keeping tar off my teeth and mouth and drying smoke.
I've seen it quoted in a bunch of places.
Vauen's site says 95%, Interesting facts - https://www.vauen.com/filters/interesting-facts.html
I follow Bremanpipesmoker on YT and he's located there, he's mentioned many times that almost all pipe smokers in Germany use them.

I totally agree with you about exercise and walking. A famous pipe maker near me, Julius Vesz, is 90+ years old and recently retired. He would walk 4-5km a day to and from his workshop in the Royal York hotel (apparently).

I use 9mm filters because the smoke tastes better but I also like the fact I'm getting less tar in my mouth, double bonus. It's definitely a much drier smoke too.

Mediterranean diet, daily exercise, socialization/keeping busy, and moderate pipe smoking for relaxation are great recipes for longevity and a happy life.

How's the draw on those multi filter pipes? Like sucking a bowling ball through a coffee stir?
I’ve never experienced anything like this and I would advise anyone that has that experience that something is wrong. 9mm filters really don’t make much of a difference at all to me.

I agree 💯.

If you are having any sort of draw issues it's either a problem with the engineering of the pipe or more likely a problem with your packing.

The issue with 9mm filters is you can't try them unless you commit to buying a 9mm pipe which is a rather expensive experiment.

Yes, I was minding my own business and smoking along. One day I bought a 9mm pipe by accident. I ordered some filters out of curiosity an there has been no turning back.

For me as a beginner, I started with a 9mm pipe and got used to that draw. I got a cob at some point and felt like I was trying to smoke through a 24" drain pipe. It was way way more open and that required relearning how regulate my draw. I gave it away. I didn't need another variable along with tobacco cut and packing techniques. Now I can't tell a difference between 6 and 9mm filters. Those seem about the same.

Not necessarily. One can purchase a perfectly serviceable Molina from SP for around $50. If the buyer finds they don't enjoy smoking with a filter or balsa insert, they can simply choose to go without, and with or without a 9 to 3 mm insert as well. I have a Molina and it's a fine smoker.

I've never looked at those before, they look decent for the money.

Id say a fair endorsement of Molina is the number of top shelf vendors who carry them. Ive never used one or seen one up close but photos seem to suggest pretty darn good workmanship for the money.

On the filter front. I have tried more of the older blue capped vauen filters and I can clearly say that they suck. Ive gotten a number of them from people who sold me estate pipes. To be fair they are older. Maybe they have absorbed moisture...maybe not. My experiece with them is that the draw is pretty much terrible in comparison to the new version by Vauen. Ive rolled them agressively between my fingers, hit them on a table and still they are just no fun. None of the white cap filters on both sides have a restricted draw on a well made filter pipe.

That said, I do have one full bent filter pipe that is a tad tight regardless of filter. I think the opening on that specific pipe is restricted becuse of the pipe and the bend, not the filter.
