Question for you guys how does filtering change the way the pipe smokes and what advantages do you see? I have no filters in my pipes!

In my case I like to use filters to smooth out the rough edges of a blend. For instance, if I smoke a Burley blend in an unfiltered pipe it'll often leave me with a sore throat afterwards, but if I smoke it in a pipe with Dr. Grabow paper tube filter or a Vauen activated charcoal filter it really takes all the harshness out of the blend and it doesn't bother my throat at all.

The downside is that it makes the draw a little tighter and reduces the intensity of the flavor a little, but for me it's a worthwhile trade off to be able to smoke the Burley blends I like without getting a sore throat. puffy

Appreciate the knowledge!

Here is a good place to read more:

9mm high quality activated charcoal filters reduce the tar and nicotine in the smoke. Reducing tar is especially helpful for both taste and health.

The filters also trap moisture in the papers allowing for a drier more enjoyable smoke.

Personally, I find the filters smooth out and enhance the flavors by taking out the harshness.

Activated charcoal is very safe and actually good for the body, some people even take activated charcoal pills for 14 days once or twice a year because they are effective at getting rid of toxins in the body.

I have a lot of pipes and my non-filtered pipes don't really get smoked very often anymore. I encourage you to try a 9mm active charcoal filter, you might be surprised.

The one thing I notice when i smoke a non-filtered pipe is the aftertaste in my mouth. With a 9mm filter pipe, my mouth feels clean and fresher.

Being Canadian I have a few Brigham pipes with the rock maples distillator but other than trapping some moisture I can't say those do much, at least in my experience. They may be easier on the tongue for bitey blend but I tend to smoke English mixtures which don't bite.
I dry, and sip and generally take it easy. I like charcoal filters to remove tar, gunk (that’s visibly left after use on the paper) and other yucky stuff. I try with and without filters on army bit pipes and can’t tell a difference in taste (personally- YMMV).

I actually notice a different on taste... Smokes with 9mm filters taste way better!

This has been discussed extensively on this and other forums. The right answer is only what is right for your personal perceptions of taste, etc.
That's why I started with "I actually notice."

The biggest issue with 9mm filters is the perception. Most people that knock them actually haven't given them a chance, which is a shame.

I only tried them because of the stats I saw from the German market. I figured the usage in Germany can't be 90% plus if they negatively affected the smoke.

Every few months I pick up one of my artisan non filtered pipes and then I'm disappointed. My guess, pipe smoking would grow again if more people discovered the 9mm filter.

Curiosity drove me to try 9 mm filters and I found them to be way too restrictive. I wouldn't smoke pipes at all if I had to suck like that every time I light up. But that's just me.

Two questions, though: I have White Elephant with meerschaum chips, and Dr. Perl Junior with the blue end. Neither one "works" for me, but why does the blue end of the Perls have to be inserted toward the stem? And is there a regular Dr. Perl filter, not Junior? I'll end with the word I began with, curiosity.

I think the blue end filters are the older version. The blue is plastic so it faces you while smoking. I dont like them. The newer version has a white ceramic cap on both ends and it is more free on the draw. A good 9mm pipe is not very restrictive with a filter. The only ones I like and I use them on almost all blends is the Vauen. OThers Ive tried were not great.

Its still not the same. Ive tried a bunch of things to get a filter effect from a no filter pipe and finally gave up. I just save my no filter pipes for a few blends I like straight.
Well ofc it won't be the same as having a filtered pipe, but they do help tame alot of blends ime... and alot of people don't even know about them hence why I made the suggestion to 9mm

I also prefer my pipes with filters. I have both 6mm and 9mm. They all draw easily and do help with keeping the pipe cleaner in the stem. I just ordered some of the White Elephant meerschaum filters, but haven't tried those yet.

'blue to you' vauen filters were the old design. The blue cap was plastic so you couldn't have it on the hot end towards the bowl. The blue cap also had a unique hole pattern for smoke flow. On the new version both caps are ceramic and can be used in either direction.

If you are using a 9mm filter and the draw is tighter, that's either a packing issue or a pipe engineering issue. I've never experienced them to restrict the draw. I will German pack all ribbons and usually cube and gravity all flakes.

I've got a Vauen, a Stanwell, and an Il Ceppo mit dem Filterstein. They all smoke great--without the filter. They all are barely smokeable with the filter. I know a hard suck when I feel it. :col:

That pipe is a beaut!

My guess, it's the pack. I've smoked a bunch of 9mm pipes with all different types of filters. Only issue I've ever had was when my packing sucked.

90% in Germany! Wow! Hadn’t seen that number, where did you get it from? Somewhere in the forum here was an old discussion about comments by a German doc. His point was the diet and exercise (walking) routines of pipe smokers in Germany was such that many lived into their 80s and their deaths were old age and not cancer related. Good advice. Keep moving, and enjoy your life.

Filters aren’t about safety for me, it’s about keeping tar off my teeth and mouth and drying smoke.
