Thanks so much! Is there a way to get different mouth piece? They actually take 3 filters believe it or not... but no, and trust me I've looked. Currently on the market I do not know of another 9mm pipe that can hold more than 1 filter at a time.
Have you ever tried the Auenland series? They're only 1 filter but the churchwarden design/stem length affords more cooling factor in a more traditional format
No problem.. unfortunately I'm not aware of any that you can just buy but perhaps a pipemaker would be able to make a custom one for you... I know there's pipe makers that repair/replace stems but you'll have to do some digging because some of them (Boswell is an unfortunate example) refuse to attempt working on filtered pipes. I have a cheap Crown 9mm that developed a crack in it myself :/Thanks so much! Is there a way to get different mouth piece?
It depends a bit on the filter used but, in general, the filter works more as a sponge than an actual "filter". I.E. the main purpose, as most are designed, is really to sit in the bottom part of the shank/stem in order to sop up excess moisture which tends to condense there. Hence eliminating gurgle and sucking up condensed, bitter tar/water soup from your stem. They (along with things like a calabash/secondary chamber and/or churchwarden length stems) can really help tame the more "bitey" blends (especially the wetter aromatics).Question for you guys how does filtering change the way the pipe smokes and what advantages do you see? I have no filters in my pipes!
Perfect now that makes sense! It depends a bit on the filter used but, in general, the filter works more as a sponge than an actual "filter". I.E. the main purpose, as most are designed, is really to sit in the bottom part of the shank/stem in order to sop up excess moisture which tends to condense there. That's why theyre generally made of things like absorbent woods, paper, or granulates and have lots of empty space where the smoke goes right through. Most of them don't really "filter" the smoke like a cigarette filter does. That's why some tend to misunderstand their purpose (thinking they'll make a blend weaker) and therefore miss out on their benefit...
No problemPerfect now that makes sense!
Great visual!No problem
Not to give you an excuse to drop more money than we already do but if you should have the opportunity, def give one a try sometime... again especially if you gravitate to wetter blends.
My personal favorites are the Brigham Rock Maple "Distillator" as they call it. They're hollow dowels of porous red maple. They'll actually pass a pipe cleaner (again, plenty of space for unfiltered smoke to pass) but they work incredibly well at absorbing all that gunk, and they're washable/reusable for dozens of times each as shown here.

Interesting facts

9mm high quality activated charcoal filters reduce the tar and nicotine in the smoke. Reducing tar is especially helpful for both taste and health.
The filters also trap moisture in the papers allowing for a drier more enjoyable smoke.
Personally, I find the filters smooth out and enhance the flavors by taking out the harshness.
Activated charcoal is very safe and actually good for the body, some people even take activated charcoal pills for 14 days once or twice a year because they are effective at getting rid of toxins in the body.
I have a lot of pipes and my non-filtered pipes don't really get smoked very often anymore. I encourage you to try a 9mm active charcoal filter, you might be surprised.
The one thing I notice when i smoke a non-filtered pipe is the aftertaste in my mouth. With a 9mm filter pipe, my mouth feels clean and fresher.
Being Canadian I have a few Brigham pipes with the rock maples distillator but other than trapping some moisture I can't say those do much, at least in my experience. They may be easier on the tongue for bitey blend but I tend to smoke English mixtures which don't bite.
