You've inspired me. I've been saving my favorite Kent Rasmussen *** for an unspecified special occasion which is unlikely to ever come. I believe sunset will bring with it a nice smoke. I also have a humidor filled with finely aged cigars that I seriously need to start lighting up. I've always been saddened by the image of a dead man laying next to a chest filled with 30rd old Macallan, Baccarat crystal, aged cigars, and unsmoked pipes, all acquired for those special times that never came.

My traces of Scot ancestry apparently are dominant genes and I can economize on the most ridiculous things.
I know just how you feel. Scottish genes are as stubborn as our ancestral homeland's national flower. I do not know how many times I have reached for one of my best pipes only to withdraw my hand and opt for one of my rescued beaters.

I have several unsmoked pipes. One is especially important, a Dunhill one of a kind. I just can't bring myself to smoke it, plus one or two others.
And this is from the guy who says, if you buy it, smoke it!
Yeah, I know. Kind of hypocritical on my part. I feel your pain, all you guys who hold back from lighting that really special pipe.

Like a lot of others, I tend to reach for certain pipes over and over, either because they play well with the tobaccos I enjoy, or there is just something that I can only describe as familiarity. It feels good to smoke them. I don't have any ultra high end pieces, yet I feel uncomfortable bringing a Dunhill or Castello to work. There are two unsmoked pipes in the rack, but I am working on it.

We have this topic at least once a year. And every time we do, a number of members here "confess" that they have a pipe, or several pipes, that they haven't smoked and aren't going to smoke. They just enjoy having them. What I take from this is that a pipe can be an implement for smoking, or a pleasurable item to contemplate and enjoy. Both seem perfectly valid to me.

I'm the opposite, I tend to smoke my more expensive pipes more. To me it's like spending more time with the person you like more.

Not that large of a collection here, about six pipes that I smoke with any regularity, but my Stanwell, Peterson, and 1920s Kaywoodie see less use than others, mostly because I usually smoke away from home and am loathe to carry or walk with these. That may change, though, since I'm left rotating three pipes, and these are my favorites after all. I may take the Kawoodie to work with me tomorrow.

I would have a high end pipe rather than 10 regular. I don't have the life to waste on breaking in and taking care of numerous pipes.
Even I tried to minimize my rotation. I still got much more than I would regularly use. That causes anxiety... I hate collectors. They are so childish to enjoy owning things...

My, my what a strong statement. Why would one waste emotion "hating" a collector. Collectors keep a lot of money circulating, harm no one, add expertise to the board, and seem friendly enough.
weezell: Au contraire! I am seriously thinking having the pipes cremated with me. :D One last smoke as it were. Just a thought though. I suspect the kids will send them to landfill along with other "useless" things I have acquired over the years.

halfy hates me. I shall now have to start collecting something else to console myself.

From another thread, this is what Peck said would be the ultimate use for his "cellar".

Though to fit Peck's rather substantial holdings, the Viking ship would have to be about the size of the USS Midway.

Hate on! Stay wrapped up in what others may do and continue to churn in judgement over it.
