I have been breaking in all of my new commissioned pipes from Jack Howell and all of them have been dedicated to Virginia flakes except one which I have dedicated to Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky. I plan on dedicating more Howell's to specific blends once the pipes are broken in. I have never had to break in this many pipes at one time. The Orlik pipe has been great. I knew after one bowl it would be a great fit.
Your collection of Jack Howell pipes is spectacular. I'm sure any blend would smoke beautifully in them.

I reserve a small number of pipes for latakia, Lakeland and aros. Otherwise, I just rotate the pipes and put whatever blend I'm in the mood for into the next pipe in line.

I used to smoke anything and everything in all of my pipes but in the last few months I have really started to match certain blends with certain pipes. When trying something new to me I do like to give it a go in pipes with different chamber sizes but for the most part I’ve decided what kind of pipe I prefer for different blend types and tobacco cuts.

II like trying new tobacco. When it doesn't work in one pipe, it will most likely be good in another. I don't have a favorite. They are all okay, sometimes good. I just found out I don't like rubbed out plum pudding very much. If, however I save 3/4 or 1/2 of a bowl overnight. It tastes better the next day. Don't know why. Better to the point I move it into the good category. Perhaps I'll try drying it out overnight and smoking the following day. I'm still confused and testing.

I'm curious Jesse, you've been doing this a long time and probably have 3 tons of tobacco stored. At this point how often do you try a new blend? Or have you tried them all by now? ;)
Well, not quite 3 tons, but enough to last me the next 10 to 15 years as the rate that I smoke, so more than a lifetime supply. Certainly nothing like the Brobdingnagian proportions of a number of hoards in the pipe smoking population.

Only @JimInks has come close to trying them all. I'm a total piker by comparison, with maybe only 500 to 600 blends smoked. But I'm content with what's been gathered.

So I rarely buy anything new, but on rare occasion when my curiosity is piqued, will try a ultra small batch one off, or a special release, examples of which would be FBV Endless Void, the 25th Anniversary tinned release of Watch City Old Dominion or Sutliff Cringle Flake. For me these are really interesting tobacco blends made by blenders whose work I like, using properly aged components rather than green tobaccos. I can enjoy them now, or later, which is a plus. I never know how much "now" I have left.

Harris, I know you're a flake smoker, and you have a lot of commissioned pipes, but it almost sounds like you decide what you're going to smoke in a particular pipe ahead of time. Are you basing this on shape and bowl size, or just pure preference? And just out of curiosity, when you assign a pipe to a brand of flake and stick with that, do you ever wonder if that flake might smoke better in another pipe? I guess I'm asking, do you ever switch it up just to see if there's a better match?

I suppose your much like Jesse where you already know all the tobacco's you like and are stocked over the top, along with a plethora of pipes to smoke from, so it's probably easier for you at this point match tobacco to pipes.
And I doubt you have any tobacco in your cellar which you don't or didn't like lol.
