@lordofthepiperings - Actually, no, capitalism is not based on greed. It’s based on the idea that the means of production are privately run, not run by the state. It’s based on willing buyers and willing sellers agreeing on fair value for goods and services without the intervention of the government. It’s popular to brand businesses and the people who run them as “greedy” today.
I don’t have a problem with capitalism really. Companies can totally charge what they want, if there’s people willing to pay that for it they will and if not eventually companies will have to lower prices or go out of business.
I do think some corporations could afford to pay their employees better instead of giving the bosses exorbitant bonuses, but that’s another topic entirely.

I would wholeheartedly agree with that. Capitalism is all about offering a good or service at a fair price that meets the market demand. Supply and Demand economics at work. If one company decides that the fair market price for their pipes commands a price north of $1,000, then someone will buy it. There's a market for everyone and it's up to each person what they decide is worth buying or not, but if those pipes weren't selling for the asking price, then either A.) the price comes down or B.) the pipe sits there collecting dust until it's purchased. Something tells me that a lot of these higher priced pipes aren't sitting on a shelf collecting dust, unless that's how the buyer decides to keep it.
I can only say that for myself, if I bought one, no matter the price, I'd smoke it. It was made as a pipe, so I'm going to use it as such. These are all great insights. Always interesting to me to know what someone would do with something they collect. I know guys that collect classic cars. Some guys collect them only, never drive them a mile. Then some take them out to enjoy the classic car for what it was made for. Same concept as pipes, I suppose.
We all have different ideas of what we would do with something we considered of high value to us. For some it might be a great smoke from a $10 cob, for others it could be pulling out that $1,500 Christmas pipe for a rare smoke. Then again, it could be someone that just enjoys the beauty of the carved pipe and treats it more like a work of art. I can appreciate that. Much like my other hobby of collecting double-edged safety razors. Each one I collected, I cleaned it, disinfected it, shaved with it, then added it to my collection. Now I have a 6-inch beard, been growing for over a year, and only stare at my lovely collection of safety razors. Until I want to shave again, then I'll pick one of my choosing, and indulge myself in a fantastic wet shave.

I guess this is more theory as I am no where near able to afford such a pipe, but if it is an instrument, I would think you would want to use it and light her up! I guess if it had some type of historical value maybe...

No, I don’t have any thousand dollar pipes that I smoke. - But I do have several thousand cents pipes, and they all smoke very well (all are cobs).

“This is not a pipe,” ... “It is a symbol.”

Chasing - thanks for the link. That $3,500,000 pipe made my night. And best quote ever.

My Mother always told me what someone paid for something was none of my business.

Years ago when I had more money than sense i bought a Porsche. I would drive it everywhere including to work daily. Constantly being why it wasn't in my garage. I replied if all I was going to do look at i could saved lots of money looking through the window at the dealer

Your mother was one smart cookie!

But consider if you had bought a mint Hispano-Suiza. You could have driven it or left it sitting in the garage and it would have simply become more valuable, regardless. There's always a market for rare, original, and mint.

>>" I use Dunhills for CB grape." -- Yeah, but you also use them for boat-anchor starter kits, so..... Ad if you start in on using those dang raisins again....
>>"go much higher -- Eiffel Tower Pipe" -- YOU, sir, are a mess. Yeah, I know: "It's just one of the services I offer." }:) That is one totally !obSCENE! price tag for a pipe. Or anything else either, for that matter.

This got me thinking about how one would go about purchasing an estate pipe that was owned by a "famous" individual. I've collected autographs and historical documents for almost 40 years and the attraction is that you have a piece of history in your hand. The same could be said about a famous pipe. Would love to get my hands on one of CS Lewis, Churchill or Hemingway. I guess that would be the only pipe I wouldn't smoke and put on display in my media room.

It’s all about the smoking experience for me. The most expensive pipe I have ever purchased has been about $300, and I have a couple of $500 pipes on my wishlist. So far, I have only found a couple of aspects of different pipes that seem to make one pipe a better smoke than another, and that hasn’t been related to price, at least as far as my palate has been concerned. If I do ever buy a $1000 or more pipe, you can bet I would smoke it, after all, isn’t that the point?
