Do You Sell Your Estates Or Use Them Up?

I was thinking about the stories we've all heard about our dads/grandfathers/uncles having 1 pipe, and when it got dirty or broken they would toss it and get a new one. Does anyone do this anymore?

Maybe some of us might do this with a cob, but I can't imagine tossing a briar unless it was really smashed up.

With the exception of the first few I ever bought, over 30 years ago, no.

And I’ll probably sell off stuff eventually. I have sold stuff that no longer appeals to me, or just don’t smoke it anymore.

I've never burned out a briar, and I can't make myself throw something away if it still works well, so I clean them up and give them to new pipe smokers or friends with too few pipes!
Also, a Lakeland lover like myself can always just dedicate a pipe to a single blend and not worry about ghosting if they aren't going to use it for anything else anyway.

Yes, the most pipes I have on hand at any given time is 2 or 3 and I could easily make it on 1. I buy pipes to smoke not collect and when they are not useful to me anymore or I tire of them they get replaced. I always have an unsmoked pipe or two in reserve.

I can’t see how a good pipe is a disposable object unless abused. I’ve certainly never seen one burn out unless there was an inherent flaw in the briar or the person created a tiny inferno in the chamber every time they smoked by using improper technique.
Now I’ve had a few turds, but they were turds from the get-go. Kind of like ‘ember’s experience with those Dunhills. I can see tossing something that doesn’t work.

Ah, yeah, I guess I just read it as the pipe getting physically used up rather than just falling out of favor. That makes sense.

Its a compulsion. Once I see an item as being something in the way, it has to be gone.

Sometimes I wish I had a little more of that in me. I tend to hold onto crap I don’t need out of thinking it might be useful again one day. Thankfully my wife is a bit more like you in that regard, so we kind of keep each other straight.

I have a number of pipes that don't make it into my regular rotation. Problem is, most of them wouldn't sell for squat on eBay. So I keep them to smoke when I'm traveling, going out or whatever other circumstance where I don't want to put a favorite at risk. Pipes don't take up a lot of space, I see no reason to discard a perfectly functional tobacco smoking device.

I'm going to be culling the herd when I retire, as the time involved in photographing them to sell is more than I can commit. I've only tossed out a couple of pipes that I accidentally damaged.

I just send them to Steve Fallon to get rid. He does all the work and I get 65 percent of the eBay sale.

I sell them if I lose interest, otherwise the pipes in my permanent collection will probably outlive me. In a manner of speaking, it is I who am being used up more quickly than my pipes.

If my son has no interest in pipes by the time I die, I shall have found someone to bequeath the collection to, in whole or in part.

Maybe its just because most of us have more than one pipe, and we can rotate through them. I would guess if you only had one, and used it regularly, it would be spent fairly quickly.
