Of course it depends on the size of the bowl, but "in theory" you actually don't want to light the entire surface area of the tobacco in your pipe, the perfect burn has the ember in the middle and a "toasting zone" around it where most of your flavor will come from.

Yes, an even light across the surface gives me an even burn down the bowl.

Oh yeah, exactly like you. Move around for as even of a light as possible while avoiding the rims. Can't stand a charred rim.

I spit swipe all my rims before every light because I hate marked rims that badly.
