Yes a propriety rubber. I’ve only installed one thus far, on my savinelli author which has a very wide mouth piece on the stem and it initially the softy did not want to get on there. Being a mechanic by trade, I put a little lube (saliva) on the mouth piece and it slid on easily and fits like a glove. I will try one on a different pipe tonight perhaps, but so far so good.
Have fun with the permanent line it will etch on your stem. ?

Never used them on smoking pipes. But did use on couple of sets of bagpipes. I used to just leave 'em on. It's not like someone else will use it. But the thing to do is, don't tense up when smoking and you might not need it.

Just a fair warning.

also, what is the point of the rubber bit? Who are you saving the bit for?
It’s a combination of not wanting to chew it up and discomfort I get in my teeth despite being 31. My corn cob looks like a rat has been chewing on it and I’ve only smoked it a handful of times. Maybe I’m clenching too hard?

Yes I’d say so. I only use enough pressure to keep the pipe from falling, and really it’s more of a lever type balance on my teeth than a “bite”.

Quite common on bagpipes. Do you play in a band?

These are not two nutsacks or butts. They represent teeth. I don’t even bite down on the stem I let it hang from my opened teeth like this:

although the diagram looks obscene bordering on pornographic...that’s the way I do it too ?

But you still play? Sorry if I’m intruding but I’m a full-time professional Scottish fiddle player and always interested in folk who are involved with Scottish trad music.
I haven't completed since 2012. Started playing in 1984. At current time, my fingers are having too much pain to keep on playing.
