The first 2 pipes I bought are the last pipes I pick up now. A peterson bent dublin (bowl too close to my beard) and a long (long and impractical) Vauen Auenland churchwarden. Although... the next time I go hog hunting, I may bring the churchwarden for effect at the lodge smoking area. Hehe

In my humble opinion the beard might be the problem. Maybe tie it behind your head when smoking that pipe ;)

Another engaging, well written article from GL Pease, always a pleasure.

Of course I have pipes that I haven't and will never smoke, and that's just fine with me. While I'm primarily a smoker of pipes, I also have an active interest in the history of the trade, and have a few antique unsmoked pipes. They are like miniature time machines in their still original state. I never sought out unsmoked pipes, but these just found me.

The only place where I harbor a slight disagreement with Greg is when he says pipes are meant to be smoked. I disagree. Pipes are meant to be enjoyed for any of a number of reasons.

While 97% of what I own is smoked, there are pipes that will not be smoked by me, antique unsmoked pipes, some antique pipes in delicate condition that I prefer not to smoke. Everything else is up for grabs.

The immediate reason I'm not smoking this and never have yet, is because it's with Mike Billington at Blakemar Briars, for a stem replacement, and that'll be for a few months now since Mike is semi-retired... but I did buy the pipe mainly to look at because I think the colouring gradations on the bowl are beautiful. The idea is to mount it in a display case when restored, and hang it on the wall - if I can resist the temptation to smoke it at least once...

I smoke all my pipes but I have only 7 briars. Need to buy more.
If I don't like a pipe I don't hide it, I sell it.
I am new to pipe smoking and I have already sold or returned 3 pipes.
My next purchases will be more careful.
Also I do not like collecting things I don't use.

That, sir, is an amazing pipe! I hope it smokes as good as it looks when you get it back! Provided of course you CAN'T resist once it's home. lol

I have so many damn pipes I just don't have the time to smoke them all. And I am A: a person who is totally fine buying and smoking used pipes and B: not in a hurry to smoke a pipe just because it is unsmoked. Therefore, I may very well die with a few dozen unsmoked pipes. lol

Honestly, I am thinking of getting a table at the pipe show next spring and selling off a ton of pipes and tobacco I am increasingly less likely to use, year by year.
