Cool that Greg has a pipe that he keeps around just to sniff the bowl.

I got one of those too. A tiny Dunhill billiard ghosted with Condor. It reminds me of my grandfather. Not because he smoked Condor, but probably because Condor smells like his 70’s aftershave.

Only one. The reason is not sentimental. I bought it on impulse and didnt like it as much when I got it. I will probably eventually sell it. I will take less of a loss if it remains unsmoked.

When I buy a new pipe its like Christmas. I open it, admire it, load it up and smoke that sucker!

I think I have two or three that I've smoked maybe once each. I bought them at fleamarkets for $15 each. One is what I call a Bavarian pipe - the one with a cherrywood stem, a detachable bowl and a round hard rubber (maybe vulcanite) bit and a wind cap.

The other one is a small Hunter (the one on the left, the one on the right is a Mr. Brog's Pear wood.)

I have a good number of pipes that are unsmoked and will remain that way. Some are beautiful examples in their original packaging; some border on being museum pieces; some are relatively old pipes that have remained virginal soooo many years that it seems better and preferable to preserve them in this rare, unsullied state rather than to smoke them and just turn them into “just another used pipe”—I’d rather find a used stunt double of the same model and smoke that instead.

All that Bavarian needs is a reed in the mouthpiece and some finger-holes in the stem and you could play it like a tiny squeaky saxophone

I have a few assorted estates that I got when I was younger that I don't smoke. Mostly because I haven't determined what blends would be good in them as well as I already have a rotation of pipes that I know smoke well.

At this point I might just pass a few of them off to a friend who expresses an interest in taking up he pipes but I haven't gotten rid of em because I'm not good at getting rid of things.

That being said one had such a massive cake on the inside that I'm tempted to take some 40 grit to smooth out my attempts at reaming, logic dictates someone loved that pipe enough to let it cake up like that. We'll see.

I have several pipes I don't smoke. It's not that they're bad smokers or sentimental or too fancy and a fear of wearing them out or any other common reason people might give... I just always reach for my favorite pipe is all.

If I had more time, I might smoke the others more, but I'm not a clencher and I'm doing stuff too often and am not the type that can just sit and smoke a pipe for 10 minutes, put it down and come back later, so that cuts into it.

This well written article went in a direction I was not expecting. Based on the heading of the thread, I assumed this was a problem pipe that emitted a foul odor or some unpleasant taste. Didn't realize it was for emotional/sentimental reasons.

But...... having said that, I can relate.

I have two pipes that I do not smoke.

One, is my dad's old Medico billiard from the fifties. I had it repaired and restored but I do not smoke it. Can't say that I never will, but at present, I like it in the curio cabinet.

Secondly, is a Bavarian pipe that my uncle bought during the war (WWII). He did not survive and was killed in Italy, but the pipe came home with his personal belongings.....

Other than that, a whole bunch of pipes I don't smoke very much, if at all, but not for any practical reason. Just have too many pipes.

This is a morta zulu by Davorin in Croatia. I may break it in with some Pirate Kake someday.

I have many "work horse" pipes in my collection and all smoke reasonably well except this one. It is a Kaywoodie and has a stinger. No matter what I do or how slow I smoke it I get so much gurgling. I like the way the pipe looks and feels, but I just don't like the way it smokes. I keep thinking it's something I'm doing wrong but I don't have this problem with any of my other pipes so this one will sadly move out of my rotation.
