I find that with threads like this, everyone will just answer, in some variation or other, 'I say what I like, I don't care what others think, and if you do, you're a wanker'. Or words to that end. Personally, I do worry about being obnoxious. I like having a partner, I like having friends, I like having teeth in my head, hell, I like being liked.

If you spend your time worrying about how people perceive you, and altering your behavior to better suit them, then you’ll never be yourself and you’ll always come off as a phony with a thin veneer of sincerity.

I think having an awareness and conscience about how people perceive you is a good thing. All of us are hurtful or negligent or downright cruel on occasions, so we want to be aware of that and avoid or correct that. Otherwise we become people who are obnoxious or worse.

On the other hand, no one should be a servant to other peoples' opinions of them. People who are generally regarded as good and kind are loathed by a few for one reason or another.

I like Eleanor Roosevelt's quote, roughly paraphrased, that you wouldn't worry about what other people think of you if you knew how seldom they did.

I guess you may be right. But for me, too many times in the past I have expressed my opinions whilst at the same time being openly insulting about others' opinions. I have found that such an approach can lead to pretty ugly scenes, up to and including fist fights. Being a little less obnoxious eases the path of my own existence. Maybe that does come across as phony, but I have to do what is right for me, all that fussing and fighting is a young man's game. Hey, I can always go back to being an obnoxious prick lol.

Just because you think something, doesn't mean that you have to say it! That's not changing your behavior, that's just pragmatism.

That reminds me... sometimes I'm having dinner with my girlfriend and she's going on about some person we both know who is a self serving pain in the ass or whatever and I silently think to myself "I doubt this person ever discusses us while they are trying to enjoy a meal".
