Clench, mostly on the left side but sometimes on the right. I leave teeth marks on the bits (mostly vulcanite since that's my preference--I can't see any bite marks on my few acrylic stems LOL!).
kindly

ps-thnx @cosmicfolklore for the remarks about your dentist's observations, interesting--especially to me since I've had skin cancer three times (two different kinds of malignancy--not oral cancer, happily). I am watching some inflamed bumps under my tongue that come and go depending on how much red va I smoke.

Soft bits was the best thing I found about pipe smoking years ago...so much easier to clench your pipe and easier on teeth and stems...There is no way to go back ...I clench on the right side but moving it to the middle and back to the right....rarely clench on the left...I am right handed and always hold my pipe witch right hand if not clenching

No, almost never and if so on the left. I'm a lefty , could that be the reason why :)
It does not feel comfortable to clench and I smoke to relax, sit with a book and a good tea. Never when at work.
Apart from that I do not want to damage the stem , I hate teeth marks .
Good T-Shirt btw; mine is a fat 260 pk V70 T5.

Maybe this should have been teeth or no teeth? It’s hard for me to imagine someone who smokes a pipe hasn’t, or doesn’t, clench in some way. May not be for the entire smoke, but there are actually people who never take a hand off of their pipe while in their mouth?

The teeth marks. Ok, I get the softee bits for protecting the stem, but I don’t find them better to use. I actually find them to be an impediment to enjoying smoking a pipe. It’s like softee bits are actually for biters, not clinchers. ?‍♂️ I do put the bits on estate pipes and have them on pipes that could possibly find a “sale” someday. The rest - those teeth marks are molds to my mouth. Each mark represents a location it fits in my mouth. ?
