I miss the original title of this thread. "Do You Bite Your Pipe" is a lot more fun to respond to.

On topic, I do clench and try to vary the area of the mouth that the smoke hits. However, clenching can be harder to do while chatting with someone else. Just my opinion.

I sure do ..try not to when I am driving, but inevitably ends up happening. I prefer the rubber bits for my stems but can understand how some do not. The only thing I am really chasing these days is a good way to retrohale without taking the pipe out of my mouth. I retrohale constantly when I am smoking 'thoughtfully' ...clenching seems to be more for 'set it and forget it' mode (for me personally)
