Yes and left side. Invest in softie bits, no more stem damage and a more comfortable clench.
I don't wear my dentures when I smoke my pipes, so I guess you could say I gum them and usually on the right side.

I have always clenched my pipe on the right side of my mouth since I began smoking over 20 years ago. I have no idea why. I am a lefty but do many things righty.
I usually don't clench. When I do I seems to switch sides a lot. Normally I hold my pipe in my left hand. I'm right handed and was taught to always keep your strong side hand open in case you need to draw.
I clench it on my right. I have a bit on the mouthpiece, so there aren’t bite marks.
Clench on the left. Try to move it around but return to the left. I can get the hang of holding it in my hand?
I don’t really bite down with any significant pressure. It’s more of a lever action that allows the pipe to hang over my bottom lip as a buffer. And, the button acts a wedge/lock between my teeth. I tend leave less ? marks that way. ?

That pipe is not going to just levitate for you. Of course, you have to clench. I don't bite. Park the upper button on upper teeth, and rest the stem on lower lip. Stable enough for lunting. I tend to move the pipe around, but left side is always more comfortable for some reason.
I miss the original title of this thread. "Do You Bite Your Pipe" is a lot more fun to respond to.
On topic, I do clench and try to vary the area of the mouth that the smoke hits. However, clenching can be harder to do while chatting with someone else. Just my opinion.

I sure do ..try not to when I am driving, but inevitably ends up happening. I prefer the rubber bits for my stems but can understand how some do not. The only thing I am really chasing these days is a good way to retrohale without taking the pipe out of my mouth. I retrohale constantly when I am smoking 'thoughtfully' ...clenching seems to be more for 'set it and forget it' mode (for me personally)
