Really simple for me
Small diameter and shallow-flakes e.g. Va's and va/pers
Larger and deeper bowls, the really good stuff-- lat blends
Of course, I'm not prejudiced at all

I would never hesitate on purchasing a Savinelli. I have four so far and they're all great burners.
As for large bowl pipes I have a couple that I only use for smoking Latakia blends, but I never use them for any type of flake.

I have 2 Sav' one is a 111 it has a nice size bowl and I really like it.The next one I'm looking to get is a Sav 614 that should make for a real nice clencher. One thing great about conversations such as this is you can learn what size bowl is good for a certain tobacco

I have two or three really big-bowled pipes, and I find them great for extra long smokes with loose tobacco, and as noted earlier, they really bring out a complex blend. My favorite is a semi-rusticated slightly bent apple from Johs. It's a Group Six XL and really swallows tobacco. Likewise, I have several really small pipes for short smokes, sampling, or for that matter for a good 30 or 40 minutes smoke with flake. Most of my pipes are mid-sized, but I like my options. A really big bowl gives you the complete keyboard of flavor in a complex (five, six or more tobaccos) blend, and it provides a smoke approaching an hour, or more. Sometimes you need some deep thought.

It's good to have a variety of bowl sizes for trying your different blends in. Sometimes there is minimal difference in the taste and other times the difference is very noticeable, and for the better I might add. Of course you need a big bowled pipe. :D

My largest pipe is a Billiard with a chamber diameter of .92 inches and chamber depth of 2.12 inches. It gives a long smoke, perfect for times like settling in to a movie or a relaxing book. When I shop for wish list pipes I go for .80 inches and above, preferably above.

Personal preference for me is small to medium sized pipes.

I like the 30-45 min. smoker, cobs are my favorites for the great outdoors!

My daily pipes are all smaller, group 2 or 3, but for long drives or nights by the campfire I have a few group 4 and 5 sized pipes.
