I use a Mac every day for work and I have to say I'm not too fond of them. They work so hard to be user friendly that you can't actually make them do what you want. If you are one who does internet, email, office tasks they are great. If you like a good music/video suite built in, also great. If you want them to do anything else...good luck. If you want the settings to be different and stay different, too bad. The thing that really bugs me, really a small detail, is that unlike my PCs, they take several seconds to spool up a CD if you've taken any pause time between songs. In a school situation, 2 seconds can be the difference between a happy class and chaos.
As for Windows 8. I follow the windows rule of OS suckiness. Every other OS sucks. XP was great and Vista sucked, Windows 7 was great so W8 will most likely be the next Windows 2000.

@Roth- I am a Tech but as a crew chief we dont deal with comps much. And the ones we do have as logbooks for our aircraft absolutely suck. The arent worth there weight in plastic. 5-7 minutes for a computer to load up so i can look at an aircraft logbook? come on now...not being a gamer, I could careless about all those features. Xbox 360 and PS3 cover those bases for what i need.
@Captain- What you listed is what i use my mac for, which is maybe why i love it so much. I think nothing beats iTunes (i know i opened up a can of worms there!!)

Trust me when I say macs go obsolete just like any PC does. Programs have minimum hardware requirements. It doesn't matter the brand or OS. Even surfing the net will be a problem. I might add I love my ipod. I don't doubt that apple makes good products but I know for a fact they go obsolete.

First weekend of messing with windows 8 and I am still highly impressed and not
annoyed one bit, everything runs a lot faster than 7 ultimate 64 bit and the live
tiles make it easier to know when you have an email, notification, social media message, etc
I even have a tile on their for this site, and allows me direct access right into the
forums :) gaming is sound on it if anyone is worried about that... was getting 140FPS on BF3 consistently...
