One thing you will learn about me is that it is near impossible to offend me. I fully expected some ribbing over the purple. I definitely love both stems though and I will always take multiple stems when given the option. Unfortunately, the bad news was someone passing. While a new pipe cannot lessen such a blow it's always good to have a reason to smile. Your humor and input are definitely an asset to this forum. Thanks to both you and hiplains.
Banjo, that is an amazing looking Eskimo, can't wait to see it finished.

Currently on the wait list of Chris Hildebrand, Mike Butera (Cant afford a Butera pipe this year, I requested him to put me on his next years client list) and Clark Layton.
Cheers,

Chris

peck, nice pipes. Currently I have nothing in the works. I just sent my son to England for 6 weeks for a graduation present so my pipe budget is shot for the month.
If you were a real buddy, you would let me commission a pipe with Jess Chonowitsch on your dime. I had this one in mind.

I do have a couple of commissions in mind when the time is right, both from Rad Davis.

Question- Has anyone ever commissioned a pipe and had it turn out different than ordered- e.g. different color, shape that is a variant of what was requested, etc.? How did you handle that situation?

Here's my only commissioned pipe in my stable so far. I posted it a few months back, but here it is again, a Mark Tinsky poker with birch wood extension with a spin on his black and tan finish, the "blast and tan". The actual blasting was done by Michael Lindner and is absolutely phenomenal. It smokes great and the draw is wide open. I'd definitely go to him for another in the future, and probably will.

This was a recent commission from Alden Pipes. Working with Ryan was a great experience, and when all was said and done I received a beautiful pipe.

There are some gorgeous pipes on here! How much more does a commissioned pipe run compared to the regular pipe carved by these guys?

I agree. The purple stem is fabulous. I don't mean to copy cat, but I love it so much that Chris Askwith just mailed me this beautiful billiard:

I had several makers attempt to make me a Canadian, but this one by Ryan Alden is the only one that was made to my specifications. It is also en route!

These will be my first commissioned pipes. I have found that some makers are a lot easier to work with than others, especially when it comes to communication. I have another billiard on commission with an American maker, and unfortunately his communication has been very poor, and I have experienced numerous delays with him. I hope I actually get a pipe or my deposit back from him. In contrast, both Chris and Ryan have been great to work with- they actually gave me an accurate time estimate and made pipes to my specifications. Chis Askwith was especially impressive. I went from an initial commission request to a pipe in the mail to me in 6 days!

PS: wyfbane, most of the carvers that I have inquired with don't charge any more for a commissioned piece than they would otherwise- pretty awesome, you can basically get exactly what you want for the same money!

Beauties hiplains, I wager they will both be great smokers. Chris is currently making me a Morta Blowfish and I am excited to see what he does with it.

Just an update on the Michael Parks Comoy 499 commission. It's coming together. Michael sent me these three shots over the last week or so.
