Here’s the solution. Eliminate tipping with a fair wage. Eliminate the expectation. Then, if you still wish to tip, do so. Eliminate rules would be my motto. Not overly complicate life by making the dining experience more complicated.
Fair wage is a fantasy.

One persons fair wage is another persons poverty.

There isn’t enough money on the planet to pay a “fair wage”. For anything.

Everyone works for a commission.. It's just that some people are capped at a very low percentage.

Waitresses were not capped.. until the people that don't wait tables decided the system wasn't good enough.

It makes the rich guys uncomfortable to see the little people working for tips.

A fair wage is easily defined. it is a wage dictated by the economies of the transaction. I think you are confusing it with a living wage.

For example, the gentleman who replaced some flooring for me worked for $4.00 a square foot. that is the going rate where I live. That‘s the fair wage and it wasn’t dependent on a tip and his work isn’t priced with the expectation of a tip.

I haven’t a clue as to whether it is a living wage or not.

I'll agree that I don't like the tipping custom. But as I'm sitting here thinking, I wonder if the quality of service would decline in a no tipping environment?

I worked in a union job once, where everyone got the same raise. I busted my ass, and there were a few that were absolute F*%k-ups, yet the got the same wage as me............ as the years went by, guess what? I found that I didn't bust my ass so much, because what was the point?

I just wonder if tipping somehow separates the wheat from the chaff?........... the bad waiters wouldn't make too much $$ and would find other employment, and the good ones would prosper......

In a no tip environ would you have more mediocre waiters mixed in the staff, as they would all be paid the same and tips seem to be like a performance evaluation.

Interesting topic for sure.........

The owner and management own that responsibility. Not the one receiving the service. Why let them off the hook.

I’ve gotten up and walked out of places that have seated me next to a family with wildchilds running amuck. First time a toy lands on my table from the morons who do nothing to control their kids, we just stand up and excuse ourselves. My kids were never like that. The parents must be on heroine to just set there while their kids act insane.
It might sound snobbish of me, but… I am really not trained in how to deal with a snot nosed brat interacting with me over the back of a chair or bench.

Oh, and places that have horrible chair height or distance to table ratios… WTF. Some places you can’t even reach the table with my elbows.

Yeh, kids… should be a f’n leash law. puffy
I was pulled out of a restaurant ONCE when i was 8 or 9 and got a talking to by my dad, that’s all it took. Different times.

I agree, but I just don't see management able to monitor a waitstaff's performance without hovering over, or questioning the patrons. That would get annoying. And many just wouldn't want to wait around to speak to the management after a meal. I know I wouldn't, but I understand that I should.......

Oh yea.. This is what were talking about here.

I had an interview for a job selling cars at Carmax years ago.. said I was hired and told me the great news that I would be making 15 bucks an hour.. HA! What a joke. I declined the position.

As with any business... if the wait staff sucks, people won't go there. Tipping merely exists so that restaurants can keep their prices lower, giving the illusion that they are more affordable. I bet most people don't even think about that extra 20% till the bill comes. Or, that most people are so bad at math...

Fair wage is a fantasy.

Highly skilled workers should not get the same as journeymen.

The only fair wage is in your head. If you get three bids you take the one you deem fair.

In my line of work their are huge variations of a fair wage based on years of experience, testimony history, mileage rates, etc.

Clients get the say in what’s “fair” and what amount of freight they’re willing to pay.

Example, sometimes I’m asked for a budget, I always go with a big number, I rarely know what I’m getting into.

Other times I’m given an address and told to go.

I very recently was asked for a budget to go to Phoenix, I gave a big number and the potential client chose not to use me. A week later that same potential client called and explained they went with “budget bob” and weren’t happy with his findings. They then told me to get it done without any mention of budget.

Of course there are industry norms, but those are rules of thumb. Nothing about them is fair.

It becomes a fair wage because the two
parties agreed to it. The waiter does not get to agree to the tips value. The service is provided and the one receiving the service determines the value in an arbitrary and capricious manner. There are no remedies if the parties disagree. In your case, you could go to court and demonstrate the agreement was not honored. A waiter has no such restitution.

Everyone is focused on tips. I enjoy talking about the shitty kids forced on me everywhere we go. If your kid is turning around in their seat and making contact with other people, please drag that shit out of my face... someone, anyone, a parent, staff, management, a bystander... someone.
And, never ask me to hold your baby. Why would anyone think a grown ass man with a beard wreaking of tobacco would want to be anywhere near your slobberdoodle.
