Rough paper towel will certainly clean better than soft, microfiber which are designed not scratch. A reaming is usually over kill unless there is a buildup of cake. You simply want the pores open so the pipe will color naturally. No real learning curve just keep wiped down. A knife is acceptable as long as you're just gently scraping. Meerschaums are low maintenance is you simply do not allow cake.

I was using a microfiber towel to clean them after every smoke but cake just kept building up. Guess I might need to invest in a nice knife or something. I've heard you can water flush them too. Not really sure. Lots of conflicting info on the web.
Microfiber is too gentle - a paper towel ream works best. I've been warm water flushing for years with no deleterious effects...
