Deertongue, Anyone?

I’ve been smoking Crooner quite regularly since Christmas. Apparently it was a fave blend of Bing Crosby himself (if we’re to believe the marketing). So it just seemed right to order some and smoke it whilst watching White Christmas. From what I understand, it’s burley and deertongue, and I’ve taken a shine to it.

Now, I know deertongue can result in some polarizing opinions. So I’m curious what you think about it.

Here’s my opinion: it actually reminds a bit of the flavor profile I used to get back when I smoked cigars regularly over a decade ago. I typically smoke Ashton VSG Illusion sticks back then. Anybody else get that same experience?

Not at all, I get vanilla/apple/cinnamon. I like all four of C&D's blends with it.

I like it as a novelty smoke, but in saying that I have none in the cellar and not feeling the need to get any.

I like the stuff. I get a Tonquin vanillaness with a grass herb flavor. Great stuff also good if you get tongue bite.

I enjoy Crooner and Engine 382.

To me, the flavor profile is like a herbal, almost mint/menthol like, vanilla.

I have a Rattray blend with deertoungue. I think it’s Bagpippers Dream. It really didn’t knock my socks off but it’s ok every once and awhile.

I thought deertongue was a blood thinner, but chasingembers discerned a chemical difference between the blood thinner and the herb, so apparently that was a red herring.

It's probably no better or worse than other flavorings used in tobacco. Crooner has a devoted following.

I bought a few bags of deer tongue a few years ago and add it to some of my tobaccos. I find that it smooths off some of the rough edges on some of the smokes. Do I smoke it often? Not really, but it does make for a good change of pace.

It tastes like vanilla to me. I like it in Crooner, the only blend that I've had with deer tongue in it.

I like it quite a bit and keep some in rotation at all times. It will definitely ghost a pipe.

@Piping Abe and [@Mr Beardsley] swear by the magical properties of C&D Gentleman Caller with deertongue. I believe them and got a tin based on their odes to the blend. Sadly, I have yet to try it yet.

I've never tried deer tongue, but I'll try anything once....well, not ANYTHING...I know what some of you were thinking!!!

It helps with tongue bite, and has a slight vanilla taste so it can't be that bad....

Engine 382 is a notch below Gentleman Caller in strength and flavor

Gentleman Caller is the strongest and my favorite

Crooner is straight burley with DT. It has less DT in it now than it used to. At least for my last batch. So I added extra DT and now it’s in every puff.

I'll smoke Gentleman's Caller once on a blue moon, though its probably been a solid year since I've had any. Deer tongue is unique but it's nothing too exciting for me. I can definitely see it not being for everybody though, the licorice of tobaccos.
