Deertongue, Anyone?

Crooner is straight burley with DT. It has less DT in it now than it used to. At least for my last batch. So I added extra DT and now it’s in every puff.

So I’m not alone. My last batch looked like the DeerTongue walked through it on stilts.

Add a bit more DT to your Crooner, please C&D.

I've gotten to where I mostly smoke straight orientals and deertongue blends.

For me deer tongue is impossible to describe. It reminds me of the woods, because where I live deertongue grows wild and I can smell it sometimes along the trail. Cinnamon, vanilla, mint--all come close. there's something like Christmas spice about it. But it's still different. I know people who pick the leaves and let them dry in wands--like lavender. I will sometimes pick the leaves and dry them and mix them with my burley.

I wonder if there's some variation in deer tongue just as there is in tobaccos. I used to get a blend from Rich's in Portland Ore. that had a touch of deer tongue. At my request Steve Books blended some with the deer tongue amped up a little which I enjoyed as a dessert blend. After Steve left, I got some deer tongue to try and re-create the blend myself and the stuff had a horrible soapy quality.

What I like about deer tongue is that it is flavorful, different, tasty, and not an aromatic. Refreshing outdoorsy taste and aroma. Vanilla apple mint are all in descriptions above that I would agree with.

I have a Rattray blend with deertoungue. I think it’s Bagpippers Dream. It really didn’t knock my socks off but it’s ok every once and awhile.

I don't believe that Bagpipers Dream has deertongue in it. I don't taste it, but I have the tastebuds of a goat.

You could be right about Bagpipers Dream. It could have been Crooners or some other one. Bad thing about a larger cellar is I can’t remember all the blends names or ingredients.

I've never seen deertongue in a Rattray's blend.

I like it quite a bit and keep some in rotation at all times. It will definitely ghost a pipe.

I almost exclusively smoke it in my meerschaum. Every once in a while, I’ll smoke a bowl in a briar, but not very often.

I have found it rather peculiar how strongly some folks respond to the mention of it.

Ok. So after reading through these posts, I’ve come to the conclusion that what I’m reacting to that’s reminiscent of those Ashton VSG cigars must the burley in Crooner. I’m also gonna have to try some of these other blends you guys have mentioned, bc I don’t get even a hint of vanilla, spice, mint, apple from the batches of Crooner I’ve been smoking for a few months now. And it’s the only DT blend I’ve ever smoked. And of course, as we all know, there’s no explaining taste. It might just be me, and every DT blend will taste like Crooner does to me. And if so, that’s not a bad thing at all, bc I really enjoy Crooner. Every time I smoke a bowl, I sing deeper and my wife swoons.

When it comes to tobacco with some sweetness to it, I only seem to like Brit Lakeland type aromatics now. I’ve even lost my preference for some of my past favorites- such as some of the Boswell blends.
I thought I’d try a couple deer tongue blends to see if that might work for me. - No dice. Not in my wheelhouse either.
