I hear folks saying they reserve a particular pipe for aromatics, etc.
Is there sound reasoning behind this? I mean, is using one pipe for all a mistake?

Ghosting. Stronger flavor tobacco such as Latakia and Parique can leave such a smell and residue in the pipe that you wouldn't want to do a major cleaning(alcohol soaking) every time you want to switch to a lighter strength tobacco such as Cavandish or Virginia.
I only suggest dedicating a few pipes to these blends.

I only smoke 1 blend with a few added ingredients now and then, but if you are changin it up, the ghosting of a briar can just ruin the taste of the next smoke unless like toker says ya want to be continually cleanin that briar. Some ghosting can be extremely hard to chase out. Ghostbusters may be needed. So for stronger blends, I would dedicate, by all means.

Normally I don't care what I smoke in any pipe but I dedicate a Stanwell Golden Danish to C&D's Gentleman Caller.

I think the deer tongue in the blend is too much to smoke another blend afterward. At least it works for me.

I have a latakia rotation, and a Virginia/burley rotation, simply because of the ghosting issue. I rarely smoke aros; I have one pipe for aros, or else I smoke 'em in cobs.
I have one pipe that is dedicated to a specific blend, simply because that pipe smokes that blend better than any other pipe I have. :puffy:

I have most of my pipe dedicated to English and Balkan blends, because that is almost all I smoke. I have only two pipes for aromatics, and 5 for Virginias. Like Toker said strong blends can leave behind a smell and taste.

Good answers have been given here. I will add that an "over-smoked" pipe is a sour pipe. Yes, I dedicate pipes to distinctly different blends. And, I always rotate pipes and use a pipe cleaner after every smoke. I also have two pipes dedicated to Gentleman Caller (deer-tongue) blend. I would never recommend sharing a deer-tongue blend pipe with any other tobacco blend. Deer-tongue is the greatest of "ghosters" but well worth it if you enjoy deer-tongue blends.

Some blends are subtle in flavor like Escudo and deserve thier own pipe . Small bowls for flakes and big bowls for AROs. Also it gives a reason to buy another pipe .

For some it is just a preference. They started pipe smoking that way and it works for them. Others have a refined pallete and feel you cannot completely appreciate the full experience of flavor if you do not dedicate. Others have found certain tobaccos do ghost (also called The Casper) and do not want to smoke eight or ten bowls before casper moves out, or worse have to clean that pipe several times to get rid of the ghost. A certain delicate flavored tobacco will taste somewhat different if the pipe had a very strong blend of a different type smoked in it for a couple of days. Surprising to some there are people who do not mind ghosting and find the different flavors interesting or good and will actually smoke and enjoy one type of tobacco and immediately switch to a certain other tobacco just to have that certain flavor. Never tried that myself because there are so many good blend/mixtures available that you shouldn't have to create your own special flavor by inviting a ghost. Just another example of each to his own and variety is the spice of life.
