Thanks Winterland. We hunt 600 acres in Central Texas. We dont have big bodied deer but we have a big population and there have been some big racks (not in the last few years).

Those sheep are African Auodad , they roam a lot and sometimes disappear for years then show up again. The pigs are the same way, you might see 50 or 60 on game cams and be lucky to see one small group in a season. Very smart animals out there, they live like comanches. Know all the quiet places and how to move without being seen. And they are ALWAYS on alert and dont hesitate to run if something doesnt smell right.

Well my son and I had our first duck hunt today..... when did our kids get better than us at things we taught them how to do? I dunno it just happens I guess. Anyway the little bugger showed me up large. Rogue our lab decided hunting the blind with him was much more fun since he gave the dog a lot more excercise than I did. Seriously though I had a ball working the dog and the calls and watching several flights land in our decoys. My son is stoked his second ever duck hunt and he had his limit and mine in under two hours. I on the other hand ruined a $500 dollar Iphone dropping it in the water trying to take photo's of the auspicisous occasion. So now it sits in rice hoping the photo's are recoverable. I could care less about the damb phone but I want thoughs pictures. The dog is fast asleep snoring, sons on the phone with girl friend trying to convince her he is daniel boone and I am settled down for the night with a Peterson 999 Silver band soaking my feet enjoying a bowl of night cap before bed. Twas a good day Lord!
Good night John Boy!

'Tis the season and the weekend...bumping in hope of more stories & pics.
Here's one. This time of year is right in the middle of Upland Bird (Grouse, Partridge, Ptarmigan) season. The first Monday in October is Thanksgiving in Canada. For quite a few years, I'd go out with my folks on Thanksgiving Saturday to hunt partridge for Monday's big dinner. Partridge are also notably stupid. This is important :)
On this particular occasion, I was 15 and my father had just purchased a Savage .22/410 over under that day. He was very excited to try it out and we stopped at an outfitters on the way to grab a carton of 410 shells. We get to the hunting grounds and set out down one of the many old logging roads looking for birds.
He's the first to spot one, about 50 yards ahead. It's pecking at the gravel and is completely oblivious. He brings up his new gun and POW! Miss! The ground right beside the partridge erupts where the bullet struck. The partridge? It looks around, turns 180 degrees and resumes pecking away! Muttering about not sighting it in first, my dad opens the breech and starts swearing...the ejector spring for the .22 cartridge is jammed! More swearing and a quick "tap tap" from the butt of his pocketknife releases the shell and he reloads, aims and MISS!
Yup...the ground right in front of the bird explodes with dust. The partridge pops up its head, looks around, walks two steps back and gets back to pecking the ground. Once more, ejecting the cartridge is a chore and takes way longer than it should. We weren't quite or stealthy in anyway at this point, but the bird remains clueless. Happily, the third shot was bang on and we walked away with two funny stories...how stupid partridge are and how you should always sight in your new rifle!

Partridge are so dumb in Northern Ontario they we didn't even waste a bullet on them. We used to hunt them with slingshots with Rocks in them. In fact the best Partridge I ever ate was in my back yard eating from the bird feeder, heard our car door close and flew into my sons bedroom window and broke its neck. I heard the thud, field dressed the bird and turned the bbcue on, on the way in the door. My wife was going out that night and my son was only about 6 at the time. He and I had wildberry braised partridge cooked on the bbuce and dad had a nice glass of wine. Total time from alive to cooked was under 20min. Thats what you call fresh meat!

Went through our muzzle-loading week without shooting, but I do have photo's to post. During our

vacation, June and I played Landa Park Municipal Golf Course in New Braunfels, Texas. We saw deer

all over the course and these two bucks just lounging on or near the fairway. They aren't tame deer,

just used to seeing people. I just thought it was cool!

Both those bucks will be great if they make it another 2 years !

I'm going to miss opening weekend of rifle season next week, but we'll be out there the following weekend. Went down last weekend and the deer look real good this year, nice and fat, healthy. Last year they were skin and bones from drought.

Well I made it down for opening weekend. With all the shooting going on, I'm surprised I had to bump this thread !
Opening morning, waiting for the sun to come up.

This is a camera shot through my binoculars. There are actually 12 does in the picture, a few of them are behind a tree in the back, a few are down in a small gully just in front of the rocks under the feeder. This is around 200 yards across a canyon from where I sit.

phonee005.jpg

Here is the view to my left.

phonee009.jpg

Its not uncommon to have deer hanging around under your feet here. These two young deer spent several hours running around my stand.

phonee013.jpg

The second day out I spotted a big buck on the hill behind me but he never gave me a good look at him. On day 3, he came out early and I got a good look. I decided real quick this was the one, but he was gone before I could ever get a shot. I slipped down from the stand and followed until he came into view. Got down prone, but he never would turn. Twice I got up to follow him and got into position to shoot, but he never would turn. Finally, I was ready to fire when he turned to head down into a canyon to my left. As soon as he turned broadside, he was into some heavy brush. I hate to fire when I dont have a clear shot, but I wasnt letting him get away. I knew the shot was good but I sat there second guessing myself for 20 minutes before I got up to track him.

10 feet from where he had been standing, I found this

Nice wide 9 point !

phonee024.jpg

Atypical down one side .

He may not be a trophy deer, but he is a good solid buck for the area we hunt. Plenty of meat for the deep freeze, and I figured out where his big brother hangs out. Next sunday I'll be back for more !

Tastiest meat I ever had was fresh deer while camping toasted on sticks over a campfire, taken with a .223 AR. I didn't shoot it though, didn't own a firearm at the time. All I've hunted so far is squirrel and rabbit. Five hunts, and I have one squirrel and one rabbit, but I was kinda cheating using my NEF Pardner single shot 20ga. Didn't know I was going to enjoy it so much; every bit as fun as fishing.
I want to hunt some doves or quail or something. And N. Texas hogs, but I'm of two minds whether I'll hurt my MOD fixed choke shotgun using slugs. Need a rifle. Something not common, like a .257 Roberts. May be a bit light for a hog gun though, also don't know if I'm a good shot!

I don't hunt, and don't really plan to. I'm not against hunting if you eat what you killl. I'm not a fan of hunting for sport though. I just don't get the point of killing something for the sake of killing it.

Nice buck, lonestar!
I'm sitting this season out. I've still got plenty in the freezer and the area where we hunt has a 1 tag for ALL seasons (archery, blackpowder, rifle) which means the surveyed deer population is low. So I figured I should givem a rest so there will be plenty for everyone!

I grew up in the Texas hill country . What non hunters do not understand is all the preditors have been killed off . If the hunters did not thin the herds then God will do it for them with anthrax or stavation in a dry year .My tip to the hunters is be the camp cook when everyone else is out in the stands sitting on top of thier corn feeders waiting to kill Bambi from 60 feet with a 8mm mag . Bambi is probably getting a drink in the stock pen next to the hunting camp . I always take a doe as you can not eat the horns .If you hunt on a real ranch honk the horn and lay down feed in the road then get a good spot with a clear shot and take your pick . The deer eat with the sheep and angora goats all year long and only hide when shiny pickups with people wearing camouflage show up .Happy hunting to all .

Man now I want to get out again...next year, restring the old recurve and take a few deer, fortunately I spent a coupla years working as a butcher and can hack a deer apart and portion it pretty quick...the cheapest place I've found around here to have it professionally done is like 200 a deer and most of that is ground

And don't get me started on sport hunters 2-3 deer fill my freezer up and I don't have to buy beef for a year or so. but then I'm in West Virginia land of the redneck hunters. You get the good ole country boys who do it for food. Then you see some jackwagons getting out of state permits coming up from Baltimore trying to hunt with a 9mm handgun. Then you get the morons from the trailer park down the street who just get drunk and shoot everything(on the upside they don't kill many animals, downside they have come rather close to shooting quite a few other people over the years)

As far as it goes I hunt for food, I also tan the hides, make soup base outta the smaller bones, make flutes outta the femurs, and am now planning on making pipes and tampers outta the antlers. Ha make the tamper outta antler and use the shell from the round that got him as a base  then I'll just use that tamper with a pipe carved from the other antler.
