Don't anyone pay attention to George, he just broke on of Jesse's pipes and is wracked with guilt. He is just taking it out on us who enjoy posting.

Ignore him and keep on posting, I like reading all the new posts and seeing all the new people. Without new guys asking questions or just having fun this place would be a ghost town like the rest of the pipe sites on the web.

You all have permission to get as silly as you want. Maybe you should copy your posts and send them to him in private messages. I think h would like that.

Here
It's easy to see both sides of such a debate.

George and a few others are seekers and givers of knowledge and hope for a venue of poise and decorum.

Then there are some like me, basically a clown with some pipes and tobacco. While I am genuinely interested in pipe and tobacco lore and learning more (and even sharing the tiny bit I've learned), I can't help spraying levity everywhere I go. I find the room full of stiff upper lips too tempting a target to pass.

Where's the magic balance? It varies per individual and consensus on the matter is unlikely.

The best we can hope for, I think, is to err on the side of inclusiveness and hope that those of us in the peanut gallery exercise a bit of restraint when a thread or discussion rises above banter to the level of real knowledge, so that the seekers can find the info they need without wading through too many memes and dick pics... ?

Happy Friday to all!

Compared to much of the internet and all of its permutations, Forums is somewhat convivial and light hearted. It is information and expertise rich, and much of the opinion is substantive. It's true, some too often post just to vent anger and frustration that clearly has nothing to do with the thread, pipes, or other members. Advice might be, keep it civil as you can, and if you must snarl, see if you can't do it in a convincingly humorous vein. And sometimes (I should take my own advice) just give it a rest.

There is certainly a point where the quality to quantity ratio of comments becomes so highly skewed toward the latter that the forum loses appeal to those who visit for pipe related content vs. general banter. The ignore function is a nice option to have as long as the overall level of drivel doesn't get so extreme that it discourages participation from those who wish to stay on topic.

I'm reminded of a quote.

"Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something." -Plato

if the level of participation on here was the level of participation of those complaining the forum would be dead already:

Damn!!!! I hope it wasn’t a real treasure, but knowing Jesse I’d be surprised if it wasn’t. Bummer!

There is a balance in most things. If the forum become dry then people just churn content. Lively good natured banter is harmless and keeps the forum fresh and encourages younger participation. If the place was loaded with old farts who just want to discuss the finite details of Alfred Dunhill's forskin covered root briars and his 1923 attempt to commercialize the 'Testicle Tamper' then this place would resemble a town on Corona Virus lock down.

Meh. I'd say there's a lot less stupid crap on this forums than on most forums on the internet these days. It can be a little annoying to click on a promising thread title only to see that most of the posts are from 2-3 people and are wildly off topic by the time you get there, but such is life. There are going to be annoyances. Just enjoy what you can, and try not to be a dick (that's my motto for everything, btw).
