I was waiting for the first cheeky comment...I used to date a British bird, but now more into British wood....pipe wood to be exact...root wood not hard wood to be specific...oh dear.

I don't know when they stopped using it, but it was registered in 1882.

Yeah I’m in the same boat. I’m assuming it was used up until sometime in the 20s. Either way I’m not too fussed to get an exact date, just a rough idea

Cheers for the feedback. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure I have seen the L.B mark on pipes that are dated later than the AF&Co too. Whether there was a transition period between the signatures, or they were used for different reasons I’m not sure.

Basically I’m having trouble reading the year letter on a hallmark and thought if I had a rough timeframe for when the L.B was used I could work backwards from that date range.

Here it says AF&Co started to be used in 1902.
