I like these! I like this style more often when the stem is flush-fit without the "candle-stick" treatment.

Free Hand, often thought to mean the pipe was made with no particular design in mind, actually means that you need a free hand to smoke it. (I kid)

They don't 'sit', although, they will clench, as most are offset for balance.

I've got a cob and a briar freehand. Their bowls are about the largest I smoke, and do tend to mimic a Dublin's taper inside.

My briar is a Savenelli gifted by a forum member that has been in my rotation for perhaps a bowl a week and gets better with practice. Its drilling and bowl configuration have the draft almost below the bottom, which gets fairly narrow there.

I've learned to leave some space when loading. Often, a bowl will be left for delay gratification and re-lit and smoked for several times.

I have seen some freehand "sitters" although I agree that it isn't a defining feature of the type.

I thoroughly enjoy seeing and enjoying seeing the well executed and artistic freehand. I've not found one which cried out for me to take it home.
Have to agree with you on this, while lovely to look at not that many that really call out to me.I have a few that I picked up but only one that I had to have.

This thread was started 7 months ago.
You are going to publicly trash a retailer for not wanting to carry your pipes after only 7 months of pipemaking? Bad form.
It was 3 years before I had my first retailer (Thanks Smoker's Haven) and it has only been since May that Smokingpipes picked me up. I would have NEVER in my wildest dreams thought about speaking ill of a retailer in a public forum. I worked hard to perfect my craft and waited for the call. I am a better pipemaker because of it.

I see. Thank you for the clarification; I think I was expecting something different in the vein of "publicly trashing". Was that OP heavily edited before I got a chance to read it?
