I don't mind turkey for Thanksgiving. It's tradition. But I don't eat it the rest of the year except for maybe smoked turkey breast when I want industrial sandwich filling. What amazes me is that the turkey marketing department has people outside the US eating it.

We are doing turkey breasts as well. Too much dark meat left over. Also big birds take so long to cook properly.Will also have a ham. We will be feeding 17 folks tomorrow. Most we have ever hosted.
All the left over does not go to waste. Our two puppies also give thanks on this holiday :)

I am not sure if I like Turkey. But in truth, I have not given the bird a fair chance by ordering it in a restaurant. Work cafeteria and airplanes ✈️ are definitely not the place to decide if I like a new food.

To show the bird respect, I would be cooking it myself for the first time tomorrow.

Spices are my specialty and roasting is my weakness so it would be quite interesting tomorrow.
If this is really your first time, look up Alton Brown’s Turkey Recipe. It is basically foolproof and you will cook a great bird following that recipe. Probably too late to brine the turkey but everything else will work great.

For the first time in my 70 years of Thanksgivings, my request is we do roast beef. Have no desire for turkey this year which we only ever cooked twice a year before anyway.
Super easy roast beef. 7 min per pound at 500°F. Turn off the heat, do not open the oven door, and leave it in there for 2.5 hrs. Make sure to season, and truss the meat before cooking. Of course, unless you are already doing this. Don't forget to rest it before cutting.

Do you really want to cook for 4 hrs that often when a juicy ribeye is only 15 min away from medium- rare?

They have ribeyes at the store this time year too. Haha

We did chuck roast last year and ham this year. Ribeyes are a good idea though. We often do prime rib for Chrismas. A Who roast beast, if you will.

On a serious note... I hope people continue to eat turkeys, there are a lot of small farms that grow them for Thanksgiving, and I wish them well.

I've considered raising a couple hundred one year, but they really are a bitch to keep alive when they're young. It's kind of a gamble.

We generally get heritage breeds raised by my daughter or from a local farm for Thanksgiving. She gave up raising her own after bird flu hit her flocks. The turkeys were already gone by that time, but the state culled all of her ducks and geese.
Sadly, I just found out she and her husband came down with Covid. No idea what we're going to do with all the pies, bread, cookies, corn bread and such my wife baked.

Now, as to the person who wrote the commie propaganda against one of the relatives of most royal bird, he just needs a good blow job, actually learn to cook, or find a female/girlfriend/kitchen wench/partner/them/they/lesbian-in-man's-body to learn to enjoy the "seven face bird"!
Can we maintain some quality on this forum? Edit: I understand it's meant to be funny, but can find that all around the web already.

On topic, my father in law is the only person I know who makes turkey a worthwhile meal, and he's not American and neither am I. His trick seems to be stuffing it with a lot of lard and baking it incredibly slowly, but it can't be as simple as that.

Of course as a European (Greek) I don't have Thanksgiving, and Christmas typically means pork (often wild boar) or goose, both of which are far superior meats.

While it isnt my favorite bird to eat it can be good. Interesting that it evolved into a national meal when most peole cant cook worth a damn. Turkey can be good but you really have to know what to do with it. It is incredibly easy to turn it into an old dry shoe. You dont need anything fancy to do the job but most households (not the grilling group here) do not even own a close to accurate meat thermometer. Probably half of those who do have only a vauge idea as to how to put it to good use.

If you want a terrible turkey use the grocery store ones and the little pop up indicator installed by the factory on the bird. You wont get food poisioning but you will get a terrible bird.

Turkey can be good but you really have to know what to do with it. It is incredibly easy to turn it into an old dry shoe. You dont need anything fancy to do the job but most households (not the grilling group here) do not even own a close to accurate meat thermometer. Probably half of those who do have only a vauge idea as to how to put it to good use.

You have to soak them in a brine for a day and it will be fine.
