thanks! I am going to toss this. A question and a concern linger though.

If I would have smoked this moldy tobacco right when i got it in May, I would have smoked the spores then, correct?

People say mold is everywhere, just has to have right moisture. How often are we smoking “latent” mold?

Not sure how paranoid to be lol.
Yeah, mold is omnipresent and can’t be completely avoided. Once the mold is actively reproducing though it’s producing an enormous number of spores. Then the chances of ingesting “too many” is increased.

Some molds produce nasty toxins as well so there’s another potential issue. No idea if any of the molds found on tobacco do that.

BAT originally did the mold study because they believed that a number of the pulmonary complaints amongst their customers were a result of mold inhalation and not carcinogens or other chemicals. They were trying to determine if they had to change their processing to reduce or eliminate a fungal problem.

that helps, thanks!
what did they determine with their findings?

The report I found only documented the testing to see if spores on tobacco could end up being ingested via the smoke stream.

I’ve not run across any of their reports or research directly incriminating molds. If they did find cause and effect in their research I’d bet that those documents were not publicly released.

Some mold stuff I’d found in my digging a couple of years ago:

The most common mold on processed tobacco is Aspergillus Fumigatus. Over 30 other Aspergillus strains have been found in processed tobacco (Papavassiliou, et al, 1971). Some Aspergillus strains produce aflatoxins which can be fatal or produce long term damage when inhaled.

A 1968 study done by scientists at the British American Tobacco Company (Wood, et al) determined that viable mold spores from contaminated tobacco enter the smoke stream in sufficient quantities to “...warrant some consideration of the role which micro-organisms may play with regard to smoke toxicity.”
