damn, i never heard that!! even with tins?Unfortunate. Your problem is that you tried to store it. GH said all their tobacco is made to smoke fresh. Do not age it. It seems around 4 months is the limit before danger strikes.

i clean mason jars, but should probably do a better job, but I do have over a 100 jars all with same process, some from same box etc, varying ages, but none more than 3-5 years, and this had been only jar thankfully.Ugg, I should not say this but in 30 years, ive yet to have any mold issues with pipe tobacco. I had an entire humidor of great cigars, about 40 of them, grow white hair! At first I thought it was cobwebs, but no, it was mold. I threw them all away and wiped the humidor down with bleach. And these were not new cigars, they had been in there for about 3 years untouched and nothing added.
Its been fine for the last decade.
Ive heard of many pipers just cut the mold off and smoke it. As far as I know most of them are alive....one died, but it was unrelated.....I think.
Quarantine is your best option. At worst you just lose what you thought you already lost. At best you haven't lost what you thought you already lost. Dang, im a wordsmith.

you think its a bad assumption if no new mold in 6 mos to a year, that it must be good? That’s a shame, but once mold has activated the only course is to toss it. Tobacco molds are highly toxic and there’s no such thing as a “safe” part of the jar. Doesn’t work that way.
Of course, it’s your lungs…
thank you for digging that up! Im sitting on a nice chunk of 1792 flake i wanted to age up. I should enjoy it now? From the source:

It is personal preferance. That is just what the blender says. All tobacco is at risk of going bad with age. You could have it for 20 years and no issues or 4 months and mold. No way to tell really.thank you for digging that up! Im sitting on a nice chunk of 1792 flake i wanted to age up. I should enjoy it now?
Yep, I think it’s a bad idea. The mold has already activated, and it’s already everywhere in the tobacco.you think its a bad assumption if no new mold in 6 mos to a year, that it must be good?

thank you very much sable! i have isopropyl 99% . ill tryYep, I think it’s a bad idea. The mold has already activated, and it’s already everywhere in the tobacco.
Mold is everywhere. It’s not a problem until it activates.
If you are determined, then I can offer a treatment, which was given to me by a much respected blender and manufacturer and you can try it.
Get a tray and sterilize it. Lay out the affected tobacco on it.
Spray it down with pure alcohol, we’re not talking booze, pure alcohol. Spray it down and soak it.
Leave it alone until the alcohol has evaporated off, might be overnight or longer, then jar.
That might work.
Otherwise it’s just going to spread.
The mold probably came with the tobacco. Ive heard of entire batches that were sent and jarred all over the country getting moldy.i clean mason jars, but should probably do a better job, but I do have over a 100 jars all with same process, some from same box etc, varying ages, but none more than 3-5 years, and this had been only jar thankfully.
admittedly, it worries me some and makes kind of paranoid. Ive heard people say its the cost of doing business. I think I have to think like that.

thanks! ill be dipping in then!1792 DKF is much better fresh to a few years old than it is much older than that, in my opinion.
That is of course, only if you enjoy the tonquin that makes 1792 well, 1792
I was fortunate to receive some from 2013 last year and it’s smokable, but really enjoyable.
As far as returning the Dark Plug, unless it were still in the packaging as received I wouldn’t expect the retailer to stand behind it.
i just bought some of that too, I love it. Im glad to hear it was a 1 off though.recently had some SG Navy Flake that ended up the same way, around 50g, tossed it. so far that's the only instance of this happening to me in 5 years.
