Yup I agree. I'd never want to own a hex pipe, but pipe #1 is my favorite.

Easy vote, for the first one. Especially for that stem thing. The red lacquer/ stain whatsoever on the second is not to my liking also the multi coloured discotheque light stem. Although the pencil shank is done well the bowl stands out in bad proportion.

I knew the "is it a cutty or a belge or neither" subject would inevitably come up. I'd abandon all notions of such things if you want to enjoy the contest. You're going to see some that push the limits, hahaha.

#1 - The craggy one piece is fantastic!
I love the blast and the stem portion is exquisite . Very cool how part of the stem matches the contrast stain on the rim of the bowl.

This is already more fun than I expected.

I'm not crazy about the hex shape, but, the texture and one piece design wins out.

It's an extension of the shank, so yes briar. The stem is not removable, this pipe was created as a one piece design in an homage to the clays of old where the cutty shape originated.

I do like the design of that shank & bit.

I typically dislike panels and I typically like pencils, but the trad shaping + unique blast gives #1 the win, to my personal tastes.

Haha, yes, as I said in the intro, there are a couple that are made by carvers with a rather distinctive style, so certainly some will be identifiable, but that's just the way it is.

This one was difficult for me.

#2 is exceptional in all respects except the briar had minor flaws (the plateau) and the choice of the stem.

On the other hand #1 is a better briar, nice deep blast though I don’t like too much artistic license on what is a Cutty, and overall gloomy choice of colors.

After all considerations it is #2, and might be able to guess who she is.
