I soaked some C&D granulated perique in rum, and after it dried out, smoked half a bowl. I am fairly nicotine tolerant, but I think I started to turn a shade of green after half of that. I've smoked straight perique before without ill effects, but this preparation started to get to me. Being ever temperate, I set the bowl down to recover. 🤢 You have to be pretty hard core to smoke this stuff, and I'm not.

What to do with the remaining rum-soaked perique? Mix it 50/50 with Haunted Bookshop, that's what! 🤪

So there it is - Crowley's Bookshop. An exquisite blend of the much vaunted Haunted Bookshop delicately spiced with stout portion of rum-soaked perique. Sipped from a sacrificial MM Country Gentleman cob, the cool smoke and flavors soaked away my day's cares. Truly a fine smoke for a sunny afternoon in October. puffy

Actually C&D has released a blend twice I believe called The Beast for that very reason though Haddo's Atheneum would probably be a better name for the blend mentioned in the OP.
I've heard of The Beast but I didn't know it was named after him. Is it heavy in perique? I know Haddo's Delight was inspired by Crowley's habit but has other components. I honestly suspect he smoked straight perique as a display of wealth or to show off his nicotine tolerance

Haddo's is a nod to the now defunct Friedman & Pease blend Aleister.

I cellared cube cut perique to smoke on its own. Sometimes I soak it in rum.

I take people who say that they smoked perique and turned green with a dash of skepticism. Perique actually doesn't have very much nicotine, no more that other forms of leaf. It does taste very astringent, like a very harsh cigarette. But, the fermentation process turns the nicotine into a larger molecule that no longer acts like traditional nicotine in our systems. However, it does increase the absorbency of the leaf it is blended with to make it more easily absorbed into our bodies. Virginias actually have a lot of nicotine in them, but the acidity of the leaf makes it harder to absorb through our mouths. Perique makes it more easily absorbable, without adding more nicotine to the blend. (This is from a lecture by Mark Ryan at La Poche)

I find that when I smoke it, it is not a very pleasant experience, but it is a far cry from being mythically strong with nicotine.

I also image that the reports of Crowley smoking some weird mixture of rum and perique is probably bullshit, like most reports of his life. He was a fraud that scammed the rich out of their money by selling them a bunch of new age mystical bullshit. I've tried rum soaked perique, and if he smoked this, he was a moron.

My pardons to those who may have thought that Crowley was really some sort of magical thing... also, there is no Santa Claus or Tooth Fairy. puffy
