I'm debating an estate pipe. It has a screw on stem. The guy says that the stem when screwed tight is crooked. It's Meershaum.
Anyone know how I could fix that?
Thanks

When it's snug the fishtail is sideways. My friend who's a handy man said saw off the first couple of threads but when I told him it was Meershaum he said he was scared that the saw could stress the material and crack it. He doesn't have any other ideas.Does he mean over clocked ? Or misaligned ?
I’d ask for more photos
It is probably a misaligned tenonWhen it's snug the fishtail is sideways. My friend who's a handy man said saw off the first couple of threads but when I told him it was Meershaum he said he was scared that the saw could stress the material and crack it. He doesn't have any other ideas.
Okay, I get what you're saying. I can definitely do that. Thanks man!Metal screw in tenon? If so, slowly heating the tenon with make it turn out. Test every few seconds for alignment. Alternately, you could heat it enough to slightly loosen it and twist the stem into alignment. Probably something like this.

Just work slowly and carefully.Okay, I get what you're saying. I can definitely do that. Thanks man!
In the case of the one in question, it should be one that is screwed into a metal fitting and a permanent fix is possible. Probably a Vienna style fitting.if you are not keen on modifying the stem just use hole reinforcement rings to shim the stem out
Okay, I see what's wrong with it. It needs replacement screw in inserts.Thats a good idea. Turns out its like this......View attachment 280538
