I am going to have to get a good pair of boots for class. I have only owned motorcycle boots and a nice pair of lizard skin boots in the past. Anyone have any recommendations? I have heard some good things about Bates; has anyone here ever owned a pair?
For our station boots/work boots we are all issued Matterhorn boots. They are great boots and VERY durable. I have even used them for wildland and some mountain rescue stuff. Now for structure FF boots I would have to recommend Globe. They make amazing structural firefighting boots. They feel like your wearing slippers!
Chippewa boots are good, too. Check the tags on the boot, though. Some Chippewas and sadly, even most Red Wings are made in China now. The quality of those has gone to crap, as is attested by the Gorilla Glue holding my Red Wings work shoes together right now. Both still make some U.S. Made Boot models and they are still the same, though.
Good luck Grizzly and much respect! My father was a volunteer FF when I was younger and then he was an EMT and EMT teacher in NY for the last 5 years. He was one class away from his Paramedic license before he passed away in December. Not to be morbid but part of what lead to death was PTSD from a horrible day in the field. Two friends of his were shot in their home followed by a large gas explosion in a duplex home that killed 3 children and a guy my age. It really tore him up. I seriously respect the courage and bravery it takes to be in either position and I know someday I will probably need the help of either a FF or EMT. Respect Grizzly!
@tjameson Sorry to hear about your Dad; sound like he was one hell of a guy.
Thanks for the tips on the boots guys. I do want to make sure and get made in USA. I'm sick of Chinese crap that falls apart.
Good luck to you, Grizz, and extra good luck if you go for RN - BSN, I assume?
My wife is a nurse. Of her class, there were two guys and the rest gals. Only one guy came to commencement. When he walked across the stage, all his female classmates gave him a standing ovation.
