Thanks to all that replied. I think my gut feeling is that it is just imperfections in the briar. Seems a shame but i do still like the pipe. It smoke well and looks cool. I'll just know what to expect next time from Peterson.
Was this new, unsmoked?
What line is it? There's quite a range from low to high quality.

As lukasstrifeson notes, only the small fissure near where the shank meets the bowl would be of concern, and then not much. How much did you pay for it?

still don't know if this pipe is new or used or what. Do people read anymore?

Oh well, just smoke it. :)
Sorry! It was actually a brand new pipe. To be honest Im not too hacked off about it. Was more concerned with it breaking further down the line. Although, If i had paid for one of the more expensive peterson pipes i would have been more annoyed. Although...I have also noticed that there is a gap from where the stem connects. It doesn't all sit flush.

Im not sure what line but it cost hundred pound. It’s got the Stirling silver mount so I don’t think it’s considered the cheapest option.

I agree that two of those imperfections are nothing, but the shank fissure would annoy me every time I smoked it. None of my pipes, at any price range, have a flaw of that nature. Even though the pipe, as is, would probably last a lifetime, I'd exchange it for another if possible. If not, I'd send it back to the vendor or the factory...in pieces, with an appropriate note.

I wouldn’t sweat it. Looks like extremely a minor cosmetic blemish. If those are also located on the inside of the pipe they become filled with oils, tar, etc from smoking and become unlocatable. I like that design btw!
