I wonder about a mixture of sodium silicate and chalk, meer dust or plaster of Paris ?
Thanks for “chipping” in. (Eh? Eh?)I have a new meer which has a crack that comes up when smoking it, and it's getting bigger (nearly goes all the way round now). The shop it came from said it happens from time to time, and eventually it will go, but enjoy it while it lasts.
Meershaum is soft clay, so I guess it's easy for a tiny imperfection to get in there at some point which then develops due to the constant heating and cooling that happens when smoking it. It would be intersting to see if some of the 'paste' solutions proposed here would work on your pipe.
You got a recipe? Lol… Seriously, just combine them in a mortar and add a bit of water before muddling? If it gets really bad, I'd fill it with a paste made of chalk dust and egg whites.
Wow that’s a relief! Not gonna lie I was feeling for you bro. A brand new meer cracking after 10 smokes would be devastating. Looks like it was just a super deep scratch. We’ll, I took a… less drastic approach: sanded it down a bit. In the right light, I can see a small almost translucent line. It’s not a crack anymore, but, seems like there is probably something there which lent itself to the crack. Not too worried. If another crack forms, I’ll have more details. Need to polish it now.
I started with chalk dust, but now I use meerschaum dust and egg whites - works just fine. Keep in mind when this recipe was concocted, chalk was a natural substance - now it is man made...If it gets really bad, I'd fill it with a paste made of chalk dust and egg whites.
Correct; that is my worry too.I started with chalk dust, but now I use meerschaum dust and egg whites - works just fine. Keep in mind when this recipe was concocted, chalk was a natural substance - now it is man made...
So, not a crack after all. This looks just wonderful. We’ll, I took a… less drastic approach: sanded it down a bit. In the right light, I can see a small almost translucent line.
