I’m not sure what that is but if it was my pipe, I’d just smoke the crap out of it, keeping the cake at a minimum and not worry. But I am curious to see how it goes, so keep us updated with pics if you don’t mind.

I have a new meer which has a crack that comes up when smoking it, and it's getting bigger (nearly goes all the way round now). The shop it came from said it happens from time to time, and eventually it will go, but enjoy it while it lasts.

Meershaum is soft clay, so I guess it's easy for a tiny imperfection to get in there at some point which then develops due to the constant heating and cooling that happens when smoking it. It would be intersting to see if some of the 'paste' solutions proposed here would work on your pipe.

Thanks for “chipping” in. (Eh? Eh?)

This was kind of what I was thinking. Considering this pipe has maybe 10 or so bowls through it, I’m hoping it’s the case that if no cracks have appeared relatively soon with a new meer, then they probably wont—not sure if that rule holds true or not.

Even though it may look like a crack, it might not be. The shank of the pipe I’m smoking at the moment has a spiderweb look about it. Meers can have all kinds of interesting veins running through them.

Bad photo, but:

I think some meerschaum pipes just have natural fissures also.

I’m pretty sure embers would just cut the pipe in half to find out if the bowl has a crack. So if you want to be sure just send the pipe to embers and he’ll be able to verify.

We’ll, I took a… less drastic approach: sanded it down a bit. In the right light, I can see a small almost translucent line. It’s not a crack anymore, but, seems like there is probably something there which lent itself to the crack. Not too worried. If another crack forms, I’ll have more details. Need to polish it now.

Wow that’s a relief! Not gonna lie I was feeling for you bro. A brand new meer cracking after 10 smokes would be devastating. Looks like it was just a super deep scratch.

So, not a crack after all. This looks just wonderful.
Thank you for entertaining us :)
