In 1977 my eighty year old grandmother who wrote a weekly column in The Index was diagnosed with terminal congestive heart failure and moved from Hermitage to Humansville’s Senior Housing.

The price of coffee in the middle seventies was just outrageous, higher than today, but when we moved Ma Agee she had four three pound steel cans of 100% Columbian Arabica coffee to put in her new cupboards.

My mother scolded her for spending so much on coffee and Grandma replied it gave her a reason to want to outlive her coffee so her ungrateful heirs wouldn’t drink it all up.:)

Grandma lived three more years and didn’t go broke buying coffee.

Not since then have I seen genuine three pound, 48 full ounce, solid steel, cans of 100% Columbian Arabica coffee for sale, at any price.

It’s as good as coffee can get.

It might not ever get any cheaper, but if it does it won’t bust you if you buy it now .:)

Today, only Scotch Tape remains of what used to be stereotypes (then just accepted) of Scottish people being frugal. The lowest line of cars, trucks, just about everything, used to be called the Scotsman.

During World War Two the government for a short time rationed coffee. One pound every three weeks. There was a ration book given with a coffee ration stamp.

That’s when Scottish Americans fell in love with coffee. We never waste anything.

A three pound can costs less per pound.

And there’s a leftover gallon size steel can.

And several in a cupboard are a status symbol of prosperity and hospitality.

There’s a Robert Ray LeRoy Van Bruce grade Scotsman at Costco in charge of the coffee!

I like to get my coffee as whole beans and a tin like that would go stale much too quickly for me.

For years now, Colombian has been hard to find around here, so I was happy to discover a local roaster who has a source. Amazingly he has just a unit in a light industrial park, mostly filled with household stuff in storage and one giant, old commercial roaster.

If you come across Black Swan coffee, give it a try!

I like/need my coffee every day and the ease of use of the K-cups is just right for me. I know the coffee can taste better, but when I need my fuel, I want it now. Also, as my wife doesn’t drink coffee, so the single serving cups waste less coffee than making a whole pot. I get that many people get into the pour over or French press rituals of making coffee, but I truly get as much enjoyment from a cup of black coffee from Dunkin as I ever have from cup bought at a bougie coffee shop. To each their own.

I've been relying on our local WalMart branded 2 pound bags of ground French roast which til recently sold for around $14 but recently went up to $16. Best price for coffee in town and it's good.

I don’t drink much coffee anymore, because of GERD. When I was drinking coffee on a regular basis my wife bought this for me because she knew I couldn’t stand that burnt West Coast crap she drinks. It was good coffee.

This was after my wife left her job at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters/Keurig. We had all kinds of options when she worked for them.

I've been drinking this, I like it.

Ma Agee died unexpectedly in her sleep one night at the Osceola hospital where she was steadily recovering from the flu.

My Uncle Ben was there, and spread the news.

I can’t remember if my cousin Pam called me or I called her and said Pammy let’s make sure you get all her proofs and manuscripts of Remunishuns, and Pammy said I’ve got em last Christmas.

Let’s go hide all those Winston’s so our parents won’t find them.:)

By then Grandma had cut back to one pound of Red Folger’s she kept in the fridge, and one more in the cupboard.

But Pammy and I divvied up over two cartons of Winston’s she had paid for herself, because R J Reynolds quit giving her free ones when the Beverly Hillbillies went off the air.

Pammy said it best, a three pound can of coffee, is for them there younger folks, you know?.:)

I've been drinking this coffee for some time now. I use a Ninja coffee maker and find that 6 of it's scoops makes 4 cups of pretty good coffee... as good as Starbuck's or other higher priced brands. puffy

I loved cheap coffee.

We started with the k-cups and the price of those things makes me sick.

It's like buying expensive trash bags.

Doesn't matter anymore though, I can't drink the stuff these days.

Coffee, beer, whiskey, tobacco and milk are aquired tastes and luxuries.

My Amish friends near Dunnegan hardly use any coffee, not for religious reasons but frugality.

Virtually all the coffee in the USA is imported from Columbian and Brazilian hillbillies who are even poorer than present day Ozarkers, except the Amish.

You will never see a poor Amish community.

Sixty years ago Ozarks Campbellites were more prosperous, when the only money they flashed was big steel cans of coffee and big shiny Detroit made cars and fancy dresses for our mothers.:)

My Daddy said it best, that when Mama spends a dollar, we can all see where it went.

Look at what the wife pulled out of the back of the pantry. She ran out of her West Coast burnt coffee, except for decaf and she needed some caffeine. I asked her how it was and she said it wasn’t bad. I took a few sips of hers and it it was good, just as I remembered. I didn’t realize we had any in the house.
