I went crazy collecting and learning to repair Duponts. Im probably going to sell off most of my collection becuase Id like a nicer archtop guitar. I will still hold on to a few.
Are Duponts easy to repair yourself like the Dunhill Rollagas? Obviously “easy” is subjective. But like, pick up a few specialty tools and you can fully disassemble and repair yourself with no problems?

For the most part yes. The only special too you need is to remove the gas valve and there are different tools for different models and sizes. Otherwise its managable.

If you try it find the videos that show you how to repair without removing the flip cap. Almost every video says to do it and its just asking for problems and on the majority of models it is an unnecessary step. Just videos made buy guys who dont know what they are doing. Some of the gasgets can be a bit annoying to source but its doable. Im NOT mechanically inclined but Im used to working with small and fiddly things. I learned how to do it so Im sure you could. You just have to be willing to make and correct all the mistakes first :)

I just watched a video of a Ligne 2 disassembly and it looks substantially less complicated than the Rollagas.

Ive never done an l2
Im fond of the l1 br large. They are overall pretty basic in design which is why you can buy one fifty years old and make it work like new again. Ali express also sells the pipe nozzle fittings. Be careful of their repair kits (gaskets and such). They are not listed properly. Sellers really dont know the proper parts.

I have a silver arabesque and love it. I also have a Kiribi and the Corona is noticeably nicer. I only use it indoors. Outside I use a zippo with the pipe insert. Pay attention to altitude. I fill the Kiribi with S T Dupont butane/propane fuel. Definitely works better than just Butane at altitude.

The Old Boy does feel more substantial and a bit more premium, but I must say my Kiribi has run without fail for 7 years. Great pipe lighter in my opinion. I’m sure the Old Boy will be no different. There’s something deeply satisfying about using the sideways striker on pipe lighters, regardless of which one it is.

I’ve only ever used Xikar Purofine in all of mine and so far I’ve had no issues whatsoever. I live in Atlanta so altitude isn’t a consideration. It might not work so great in different parts of the world!

Just dropped my oldboy again on hard pavement from my truck bed. About 7ft total in fall distance. Still works. (I need to degrease my fingers for sure).

Oh and the pipe tool doubles as a snuff spoon.

Why would it get "hot" in any way that would affect you? Now, if you're outside and it's 10 below, maybe not put your tongue on it, or . . . do, lol.

Corona Old Boy, the best pipe lighter I’ve ever owned in more than half a century of pipe smoking.
BUT
As others have already said completely useless when the winds blowing
ALTHOUGH
I‘m fortunate in being able mostly to avoid lighting up a pipe in windy weather conditions.
A WARNING
Don‘t buy a Matt Black finish Old Boy, the cheapest option when I bought mine as finding it in the half light of out of doors evening smoking can sometimes be challenging, something I never considered when I was very much younger than I am today.
SERVICING REPAIR and FUEL CONSUMPTION.
Never had it serviced, I’m sure I should but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. No repairs have been necessary which has pissed my mate off quite badly over the years as his Dunhill and Dupont lighters carried in velvet lined leather covers have cost him a small fortune in repairs.
I always set the Old Boy to its lowest flame setting as I don’t like burnt pipe rims or bowl sides. When I have to increase the setting of the flame it’s a good indicator that more gas will shortly be required and a refill will last me for about five days, how many lights miles or kilometres that equates to I have no idea.
HOWEVER.
An Old Boy is mechanical reliant upon flints and gas refills to work when required so for time out away from civilisation fishing or walking a BiC lighter and a box of matches come with me and my pipes and tobacco.

I've had my Old Boy for a bit over a year, after using Zippos, Bics and a Kiribi. I'll just say, I wish I'd bought the Old Boy sooner.
