I used spray shellac on the cob in my avatar, including the rim. Of course, I plugged the chamber. This was about 2 years ago and it has held up fine.

Wow, that's super cool! The finish is whatever. I dig it but can't see putting in the time. Drilling the chamber out to 7/8, however, is something I must learn to do ASAP. I wish @frozenchurchwarden would describe how he did that part.
