I swear the older I get the more confused I seem to be. I go to buy some candles from a on-line shop and I see a candle that smells like pipe tobacco. I go to another site and they have a candle that eliminates pipe tobacco smell. So does pipe tobacco smell good or should we eliminate it from our sense of smell. I feel like I should buy one of each and place them on opposite sides of the room and let them duke it out. Winner takes all. I guess it really doesn't matter since the Queen of the Castle has already informed the King of the Castle that his pipe smoking would be done in the sun room, preferably with the door closed and the window fan sucking the smoke out the window. The Queen of the Castle has not learned that we all live in our home by kind permission of the cat, and she doesn't mind my pipe smoke. I will concede that I only smoke blends with Latakia outside because they can linger a bit longer than desired. I just go along with things and say that my fibers in my nose died years ago so pipe smoke seems OK to me. My wife (Queen of the Castle) is a wonderful woman and I am blessed that she hasn't banished me to the shed to do my pipe smoking. So my fellow forum members, who would win in the battle of the candles.

I just don't understand how anyone, especially pipesmokers, could think that pipe tobacco doesn't smell good. Of course latakia stinks, but Virginias and straight burleys smell wonderful. My wife, who was a certified tobacco nazi when I met her, even says that she appreciates the way our house smells now. It is not even close to cigarettes.
I do think that aromatics smell terrible the next day in a room. But, Virginias, VaPers, burleys, no way. They are the ambrosias of the gods. When I open the door after being away on vacation, it is the welcoming smell of home.

Sure, sure, cigarettes, latakias, and cigars... outside. But, I can't even imagine enjoying a good movie or series without my pipe a going. Hell, if I had to only smoke outside, I would never see the inside of my house.

If I were a pipesmoker and didn't like the way it smelled, I would probably just keep that bit of info to myself. You should get your pipemsoker card revoked for saying such nonsense. puffy

Agreed. I love the smell of pipe tobacco. For one, it smells great and two) it reminds me of the old codgers that would gather around and smoke their pipes when we would go to town. What a glorious smell would come from those guys, except for the farts that were probably mixed in. Most pipe tobacco is better than any incense that can be bought.

Pipe tobacco, much like a candle, smells good when it is being burned. It's the stale aftermath that is unpleasant. Personally, I love the smell of tobacco, and I'm single, and my cat, though not crazy about it, tolerates it provided he gets his wet food in a timely fashion.

fwiw, I think your compromises more than fair, but when did fairness mean much in a marriage?

One can mask smoke but, the particles adhere to skin, carpet, paint and such. So the reek of stale smoke becomes part and parcel of the surroundings. Residents become accustomed to the odor as it slowly grows. This is why apartment owners prohibit smokers or, at the least, keep the deposit as the rooms must be repainted and carpets replaced. There is nothing available that I know of which would keep the stale odors from accruing. If you own a house, smoke in it, and then want to sell, a competent real-estate agent will suggest carpet replacement and repainting. Most non-smokers can sniff out the stale reek instantly. The same applies to automobiles. Smokers and pet owners often get less money for a trade-ins due to the odor of dogs, smoke and such. It's simply economics so, light up where you wish, ignore the downside and enjoy the pipe. It's a costly vice (economically and socially), just accept it. You're smoking to satisfy yourself and not others.

I wouldn’t be sitting on my deck this minute or anywhere else enjoying my pipe if I didn’t enjoy the smell or taste. But put me down for not liking the after effects in my house. So I almost never smoke in the house by choice and could care less what anyone else does in theirs. I’ll smoke less come winter and that’s okay, but man, I’ve enjoyed this fall and spent more time on the deck “analyzing” my garden reconstruction than actual work at it, lol. Pondering life’s many mysteries and enjoying a bowl or two outside in private or dogs or sweetie at my side are my favorite “quiet” times!

I have lived in a few apartments in my day, and I worked as a painter for a short stint in college for our apartment mgr. EVERY apartment gets repainted and re-carpeted. Who wants to move into an apartment with holes from someone else’s pictures being hung or smells of someone else’s food? All get the same do over, unless we are talking about a ghetto or something.

And, I’ve been trading cars and trucks for decades. Every two years, a new truck or car. Never has any mentioned the smell of cigarettes (or lately my pipe). Maybe some dealers will mention it to try to get a lesser price, but all cars get shampoo’d, new mats, and wiped down. If a dealer started trying to hustle me like that, I’d just say never mind, and drive down the road to the next one. Hell, have you heard how Harris used to rape people in his dealership? Ha ha. At the right time, right place, a dealership will say all the right things to get the sale. And in all of my years, not once has the smell of tobacco been an issue. And, if they did, I’d just remind them that they all make over the trade in cars regardless.

I hope I don’t sound assholish… just saying my experience.

I smoke cigars outside because of the amount of smoke they put out is more than I want in the house and cigar smoke like cigarette smoke can smell stale after awhile. Pipe tobacco smoke on the other hand I find not only smells great but also disappears a short time after smoking. I will say I only smoke between 1 and 3 bowls a week so your mileage may very and I have an air purifier as well. People come over and don't even know I smoke until they see my tobacco cabinet. I count myself lucky that I don't have the wife to worry about because she smokes pipes and cigars too. I just wonder how much the tobacco smoke candle actually smells like tobacco smoke and what kind 🤔

I used to sell and deliver new ultra-luxury cars all over the east coast of the United States from 1971 to 1981. I sometimes trucked them, but usually drove the cars to the new owner's house. I smoked a lot of cigars and pipes between, say, New York and Palm Beach. I'd get the car washed before delivery, douche the ashtray, and roll the windows down for the last 20 miles or so, to air it out. No one ever, I swear, bitched about tobacco smoke. I don't know if it was because of the times and people weren't so "sensitive" in every way as they are now, or because the scent of the Connolly hide upholstery, which was rich and seductive, overpowered the cigars. Probably a mixture of both, but everything wasn't a friggin' BIG DEAL back then.

Both my late wife and my wife had cigarette habits when younger, though both finally quit. In fact, I quit pipes in solidarity with my late wife because she struggled so hard to quit the nails. But both of them were/are tolerant of my smoking indoors, and I am not an all day smoker, so that moderates that issue. My two resident cats, as well as their late aunt Bella cat, were/are relaxed and pleased around pipe smoke. So no candles or air purifiers for us.
