Concerns including smells and interior damage can be alleviated with vaping, nicotine pouches, air freshener, and an ashtray in the cup holder.
@The Amish Tyrant It's a good job smoking is banned on buses now as the Clay King would probably have been smoking his clay pipe all the way home from Nottingham otherwise:)

I have always smoked my pipe in my truck. I DO however (even in the coldest times of winter) do so with the driver’s side window open about an inch or so…… simply to reduce the likelihood of the hazy buildup on the inside of the front windshield….. I hate getting out the Windex to clean it off, especially if it is -20 outside.

To me, the gentle residual odor of my pipe tobaccos in the vehicle is “homey” and “friendly” feeling to me…… it helps the truck feel more like my “inner sanctum”.

I do not smoke my pipe when others are in the vehicle with me, out of politeness. No rider has ever complained, and I would be damn disappointed in THEM if they did so.

Heck ya, I've smoked just about everything that's smokable in my car/truck.

So here's the deal. Most people don't know the proper way to use a microwave oven, and most smokers don't know the proper way to smoke in a vehicle.

Rule #1
Make sure the AC/HEAT/VENT is set to "FRESH" air! That's the button that shows an arrow of the air flow from outside to inside. If your running AC do not switch to "MAX AC" That defaults to "Recycled" air. And make sure the fan is set to at least medium speed.

Rule #2
Only ONE window can be cracked in the vehicle. If your smoking in the drivers seat, it should be the drivers window. And it should only be cracked about 1-2 inches.

So think of a vehicle as an enclosed vessel. If you close ALL the windows and set your vent to FRESH air, it's creating pressure within the vessel (vehicle). Now crack a window, and that pressure (along with your smoke) will cause the air flow (along with your smoke) to exit the pressure vessel through the only crack available, and it will exit at a volume directly associated with the fan speed. If you have your system on recycle air (or MAX AC), there is no pressure at all, and it's simply recycling the smoky air in the vehicle and bringing in outside air through that cracked window. You can watch the smoke go right out the window. Switch the system to recycle and watch what the smoke does.

Do this and you can smoke whatever you like, it won't pollute your air ducts, and people sitting in the vehicle will not notice the smell or smoke, as long as rule #2 is followed. If your passenger cracks a window, all bets are off... now the air goes out both cracks.

I'm a big proponent of smoking while driving! puffy

That seems to be a lot of hoops to jump through.

Do you do anything to insure the particulates do not adhere to the fabric, glass and etc? A cracked window doesn't insure all the particulates are expelled from the car. The reek is insidious. You won't notice it, non-smokers will. Enjoy your tobacco and embrace the reek that you really don't notice.

Hmm. Really?
1) Just keep your AC/HEAT/VENT system set to fresh air... all the time. Then you won't have to think about that part.
2) Just crack your window an inch or two when you smoke your pipe. And make sure all the other windows are closed.

That doesn't sound complicated to me...

With respect to everything else... if you follow what I said, there won't be any particulates to adhere to the fabric, glass etc. There is no insidious reek. Trust me on this, I've been doing it for 40yrs. Point in fact, I've had people ride with me who don't smoke, and they commented on why my vehicle didn't stink like smoke, since they knew I was a smoker (cigarettes back then, which really reek!) so it works, really, and it's not complicated.

It's just physics. The smoke has no time to linger, migrate around the cab, or adhere to anything, because it's mixed with all the other air in the vehicle and it moves as one with that volume of air. If you crack the valve on a pressure vessel where does the air want to go? And the air goes/comes from everywhere in the vessel, and it want's to go out your window crack. And where the air goes, the smoke goes, as one volumetric flow rate.

I smoke in my truck on my commute. I share(d) OP’s concern with the smell. I’ve always kept my AC settings to fresh air, a holdover from my cigarette days. I make an effort to ensure that ash and/or dottle don’t end up staying on floorboards or in my console tray, as those tend to be the most significant source of odor. I run an ozone machine for about 15 minutes every couple of months inside. I tend to keep a very clean vehicle as a habit already, which is really my reason for wanting to minimize the smell as much as possible, and all of the steps I described are things I would likely do even if I didn’t smoke on my commute. I don’t think that it’s possible to make it always undetectable, but that’s not really my goal, just to minimize odor. I’ve specifically asked friends of mine (that I trust to be honest with me) at various times when they ride with me if they notice any smell, and I either get “no, nothing” or “a slight smell of your pipes, but it’s not gross.” I don’t smoke in our house, and my wife is tolerant of my smoking, but since we quit smoking cigarettes years ago, she has been sensitive to the smell of cigarettes as offensive. My family rides in my truck regularly, and my wife has never made comments about any smells.

I grew up with my dad smoking his pipes in his trucks and our house, and I of course associate the smell of pipe smoke with comfort, home, childhood, and fond memories of my father. My truck does not smell like the truck of his that I still have.

Hope this helps OP.

My works vehicle is a rental (not cheap to rent) cheap ass Hyundai, paid for by the company.

I've smoked cigarettes, cigars & pipes in it, from new. Nobody has ever said not to, although I understand that's not the point, but it's usually the only time I get to smoke.
But you mentioned scouring the WWW regarding info' about smoking in your car and all you find is cigarette smoking, kids, other folk, etc.
Well, that's the anti smoking Nazis for you. All tobacco is evil etc., etc.

As for the vehicle smelling of smoke, pipe smoking doesn't affect it too much, if at all. I'm smoking Vas & VaRers.

Being from the humid environment of Alabama, I find your advice spot on. I have smoked with the A/C on recirculate and the odor will accumulate in the air ducts with the condensation. This WILL create foul odors. I also learned that you can open your hood, turn the A/C on wide open , and spray Ozium or Lysol in the exterior vents in front of the windshild. This will eliminate nearly all foul odors.

I commute in los angeles unfortunately, so that gives me lots of time with which I choose to enjoy my pipes. If I'm driving, I'm almost always smoking.

I crack a front window 1/3rd down and then the opposite side rear window the same. That creates like a wind tunnel in the car. When I park, I keep my windows cracked open just a bit and by the next day, my wife can't even tell I smoked in the car.

I only ever crack my window an inch. With Alabama humidity, too much wind and the condensation will put my tobacco out. puffy

When I drive rental cars while travelling, of course I smoke in them, but I will turn on the recirculation in the AC and spray some Ozium in the floor boards and let that circulate a bit just before returning the keys. Not one time out of 100's of car rentals or even nazi no-smoking hotel rooms has anyone ever said anything about smoke, NEVER!
I was asked one time, not to smoke in the pool, so I got out and finished my pipe in a chair. puffy I'm not sure why that is a rule, because the damn pool is the safest place to smoke.

Too damned cold up here to do that year round. But, I shouldn't have questioned your post as the reek isn't something I give thought to. I don't notice it in the vehicle nor, the house.
