In '81 I was already helping my uncle hang tobacco in the barn.?

I won't mention I was minus two.

My smallest regular use pipes have a 2 inch deep chamber, you can sometimes just barely get them into a jar but it leaves no room to get a finger in to fill the pipe.
The joys of smoking, another hurdle to overcome.
There's me worrying about packing to tight and drying the tobacco just right, if I only knew the problems others where facing ?

With a somewhat narrow jar, you hang the open chamber over the open jar and use your thumb and index finger to stuff big pinches into the bowl, usually two or three trips. It's not as graceful and automatic as the thumb in pouch method, but it works just fine.

The jar in my photo is a wide mouth.

I’d tell you, but I’d have to kill you.

Honestly, I don’t know anymore. I just do it.
Same here. [The not really know bit, not the "I'd have to kill you" part :) ]

Like most other pipe smokers, learning to pack a bowl 'just right' took time.

Then without even realising, packing a bowl just became 2nd nature.
The cut of the tobacco makes a big difference.
Even flakes are packed without much conscious effort. [Which of course can't be codger scooped]
Ribbon cut was probably the one cut that took the longest for me to get right without conscious effort.

I guess one just learns when it feels right.
Can't even remember the last time that I had to dump a bowl to repack, it was that long ago.

Here is a quick video tutorial.
Anyone want to bet against me that this was not yet another mass-market PG-infected, low-nicotine, bowlful of unremarkable tongue-burning hot air; and unfortunately, available at major drug stores everywhere ?

Personally, I would have MUCH preferred if Middleton had simply re-released: 'Walnut', rather than launching this failed attempt to grab market-share away from Captain Black.

When I see ad's like this, all I want to know is:

a) How much money did the company - Middleton, in this case - jettison on this bright idea?; and,

b) Were the executives who approved this failed campaign summarily and soundly beaten with the company fraternity paddle?; and,

c) Was there in point-of-fact, a janitor or mail-room boy, who perhaps pondered offhandedly and out-loud: "...why don't you guys just bring back good old Walnut?"; and was then, immediately given the stink-eye from the very same Middleton executives who green-lighted this failed 'Coup Attempt' ?; and,

d) After receiving their thrashing, were those same Middleton executives banished to the cornfield?
