I primarily smoke cobs, though I do have several briars I like and a couple clays. I do spend extra for the higher end models with nicer stems, as well as having custom stems for some. I like the light weight, the no-fuss maintenance (pretty much only ever ram a cleaner through) and the way they smoke. I smoke primarily burleys and cobs seem to be just meant for burley. I don't like the filtered cobs because I don't use filters, and though some like it, I don't care for that airy draw. For those, I have custom stems that don't take filters. My favorite pipe is a cob -- a MM Freehand. That said, there are some blends I prefer in a little wider bowl than most cobs have. For those, I have some briar author and apple shape pipes.

I bought a cob as I got into pipe smoking because it was cheap and I wasn't sure if I'd continue with this endeavor. Over time though, I've come to appreciate the care free and great smoking attributes. But I think most of all, I enjoy the never ending source of angst these pipes provide to a certain forum member, who I won't mention by name.

Don't know if any of you saw on the other thread about the forum going budget pipes, a post with links to the late fishnbango's pipes showed that among his incredible collection, he had a MM Diplomat that he smoked 4 times a day for 8 years. 10,000 smokes he figured.
