I started smoking pipes about a month ago. I just finished a bowl and noticed this little indentation at the bottom of the bowl directly across from the draft hole. I didn't notice any off taste and didn't notice if it was there before or not but don't remember it being there. It just seems weird that it is so perfectly symmetrical and centered in the bowl. Also I would think a burnout would be more charred than it is here. Kinda hard to get a good pic16873234693147083346530519874318.jpg16873235173636549683241092094486.jpg

Let me guess. You didn't look inside the chamber before loading the tobacco and putting the light on. What you are looking at is how the bottom of cob pipe chamber looks like. That block of wood is called "spoon" by some. And, no, they don't fill in the spaces around the spoon.

OP isn't talking about the spoon. There's a hollow forming in the chamber wall opposite the stem, at the bottom.

It's happened to a couple of my cobs, too. I'm not sure if it's the result of getting poked by the end of a pipe cleaner too many times or what. I wouldn't worry about it yet, but you could try dabbing some pipe mud in that hollow if you want to protect it.

I've never ran a cleaner through it deep enough to get to the opposite end in the chamber. And if I have it would have been too light to do that, and have only used it for a couple weeks. Unless somehow I did without even noticing. Someone else mentions that it could have been the drill bit running in too deep when they were cutting the hole for the shaft. Which is what I think it looks like

Not the spoon. In the wall of the chamber at the bottom directly across from it. It's hard to get a good picture of what I'm talking about
