Cobs are super light for clenching. I really wanted to learn to clench them to free up my hands for my shop. I started with light briars and cobs, then some slighting larger pipes but with rubber bities, now, as long as the pipe is balanced, I can clench and move around with anything. As chasingembers said, it's more about a balance a lot of times then biting. My current favorites in the shop are a straight black meerschaum, a bent apple Radice, and a big Nording Signature that is just lovely. Just like breath smoking, it just takes a little practice.

II bought a Sav 2614. It is light weigh, has a P-lip, and its bent makes it balance perfectly for clenching. Never a moisture problem or a guggle because of the filter. I liked it so much I got another one! If you can't find a good estate, get the current model, the 614.

I never go fishing without a cob. Light easy clenching pipe and low maintenance to boot.

<p>Thank you so much for the input! I have just bought some corn cob pipes and so look forward to smoking them while learning to clench, more balancing than biting!

That and if they drop over the side, you don't cry. I buy cheap mutli-tools for the same reason.

Can't go wrong with a cob for any situation.

Dagner Cob pipe are great lightweight pipe also holds a good amount of tobacco I use that when I go hunting also a Stanwell Billard nose warmer that has a good size bowl for tobacco as well. Both are light and can fit in your shirt pocket without stick out.

And.. you can use your cigar torch lighter on them because you don't have to worry about scorching the rim, don't have to baby them, knock them on anything (within reason) & toss them when they don't work.

Depending on how vigorous the fishing is, you can make a lanyard out of fishing line (or anything) put it around the pipe and your neck, and when that first huge strike happens, your jaw opens, and the pipe falls..... Nicely on your chest. Yeah, a few ashes, maybe embers, but you're near a lot of water!
Enjoy!

I almost always clench. I find straight or very light bends to balance best, usually the classics are good. Billiard, Dublin, bulldog, all of these work well. If you learn to clench right, you won't need those cobs that you drop over the boat anyway.

I try to find pipes less than 1.5oz and closer to 1oz if possible.
Dublins, bent billiards, billiards and small Canadians work well for me.

A legend cob with the shank cut down (-¾”) and an Old Log Cabin Pipe Works nose warmer stem. Very lightweight and very "clenchable".
