Cleaning My Pipes

Has anyone come across similar? My pipe has a metal obstruction in the bowl that prevents me getting an ordinary pipe cleaner through the stalk and into the bowl. It is a horizontal bar across the tube. Occasionally with random luck the odd cleaner slips through but is met with resistance and the cleaner almost always bends. The bottom of the bowl is like a grate with 3 holes and a chamber under them which collects the gunk but due to this obstruction, impossible as far as I know to remove, I can't get a standard pipe cleaner into the bowl.
Are there special tools and cleaners for pipes of this design? Sorry so long winded, I'm completely baffled.

Can you share some pictures of the rest of the pipe/stem. Is it a stinger?

Certainly. I attach the whole pipe, stem removed showing stinger, and again looking down the shank to the draft hole. I hope the horizontal obstruction (part of the design) is visible? As I say I can't get a pipe cleaner down the draw hole.

All this metal work is firmly attached to both the stem and the shank? This is the damndest thing I've yet seen. Why anyone with a working half of a lobe would design this way is utterly beyond me.

Personally, I'd move on and find a well made pipe without the pointless doodads. While there are thinner pipe cleaners, Dill comes to mind, and pipe cleaners wiith much stronger steel spines - White Elephant, it will always be a struggle to properly clean this dingus because of the thoroughly inept engineering.

Get yourself a properly made pipe. You'll get more enjoyment from it.

Is there a full metal insert in the chamber?

Not that I can see. At the bottom of the bowl is a base with 3 small holes in it, i presume to allow a better draw? The smoke then travels up through the draw hole but as i say there is a horizontal metal bar for want of a better word, between draft hole and shank that is preventing me from using regular pipe cleaners. I have no way of cleaning the draft hole or the chamber between it and the base of the bowl. Pic att of inside bowl showing the base with 3 holes in.

I bought it from Amazon and it is a Joyoldelf SD 735 or at least that's what is stamped on the bowl. It was cheap, I'm a newbie and it is a nice smoke but not being able to clean the draft hole and the chamber underneath the bowl is concerning me.

It's plastic? Yes I believe it has a metal liner. That doesn't bother me too much, it's the metal obstructing the draft hole preventing cleaning with a pipe cleaner.

do yourself a favour and look for another pipe.
I would not trust a pipe made of plastic in the far east,who knows what toxic substances are present

Agee on the need for a safer and more normal briar pipe.

In the mean time, get your tap water running as hot as you can, then run down chamber and out stem or stummel.

Hot water is a good start as mentioned above. IF you need more, you can use some Everclear or the highest proof neutral grain spirit you can get.

Looking it up on Amazon, this looks to be a resin pipe. Not made of wood at all. I'd be getting a cob or briar pipe as soon as you possibly can. You will most likely have a superior experience compared to your current pipe.

never heard anyone say anything good about these particular pipes. I always feel looking at them they're more designed for other things. I could be wrong but feels like a head shop thing.

I use alcohol already to clean my other pipe, tks but again I'd have to pour it into the bowl and hope it breaks up any clag underneath as I can't fit a pipe cleaner into the draft hole. I tried the hot water and quite a bit of crap was forced out the shank. Thank you all again for the help. This site is marvellous.

Um ya, Id move on from this pipe if I were you.
If you can't keep your pipe clean it will soon become worthless.
If your on a budget buy a MM cob or two. They're inexpensive, and a lot of us enjoy the flavor they impart on the smoke, and they clean easily.

I'm with the posts that say discard it. It's bother. It's some kind of patented gewgaw, not worth the bother. If you need an interim pipe, buy a MM cob which you can use with other conventionally designed pipes. I'd forget this pipe in a parking lot somewhere, or the trash bin.
