Never had an interest in 'em. Always seemed gimmicky to me from the beginning. Just my three cents (that's inflation for ya!).
Well my friend, you would be wrong, since the beginning. Like several have said they are great for reading because it keeps the pipe and the smoke out of your face. But mostly people like me who don't clinch a pipe find them easier to smoke when sitting. You can place your elbow on the arm of a chair and smoke without having to hold a pipe to your face, or clinch one in your teeth.

My preferred shape.

The stems aren't a hassle, really. Well, except for the Auenland's, because, it being made of wood, I can't wash it as I do my other stems. Other than that, it's my favourite pipe.

Churchwardens too hard to carry? Well, yes, unless you make some alterations to you everyday carry suite:

I have half a dozen in my collection plus a Castello and a Savinelli that could be considered semi-churchwardens.
I'm usually seated when smoking anyway so the stem length isn't a problem. (I do worry about starting a fire when I read the newspaper of a Sunday, so I use a standard length then!)

One of mine is a Hilson, which came with a straight stem, if I tried to clench it, it would vibrate like a tuning fork. I ended up reforming the stem to a curve shape and it's much more comfortable now.

I have a Ryan Alden Churchwarden. I bought it from him at the Chicago show a few years back.

The pipe came with two stems, a short one and a churchwarden. It is a small pipe and he made the churchwarden stem so it would be more marketable I guess.

I use both stems from time to time. I use the CW stem when I watch 'the Hobbit'.
