It's true you have to be stationary to smoke a churchwarden or it is awkward, unless you are
physically very adept. It is my understanding that the most authentic versions are those that
have fully arched stems, though if you like the straight or straighter ones, why not? You can
hold it in your hand and puff without moving your arm much at all, which sounds lazy but is
nice if you are deep in thought. If you like the shape but not the awkward length, the Ewa pipes
at Iwan Ries include some that are 7", which is a compromise. I wouldn't recommend these as
a first pipe, necessarily, but as an addition to the rotation, I think they are pleasing. I always enjoy
my two, and a 14" Gouda clay pipe. Not work horses of my stable, but fine smokers all. This
morning I am smoking a compact little Chacom blast zulu, about the opposite of a churchwarden.
