they have a great history and I have seen some handsome ones floating around the wide world of web.
that said, with the grace this older age has gifted me, I'd rather run down the hall carrying scissors.

It's true you have to be stationary to smoke a churchwarden or it is awkward, unless you are

physically very adept. It is my understanding that the most authentic versions are those that

have fully arched stems, though if you like the straight or straighter ones, why not? You can

hold it in your hand and puff without moving your arm much at all, which sounds lazy but is

nice if you are deep in thought. If you like the shape but not the awkward length, the Ewa pipes

at Iwan Ries include some that are 7", which is a compromise. I wouldn't recommend these as

a first pipe, necessarily, but as an addition to the rotation, I think they are pleasing. I always enjoy

my two, and a 14" Gouda clay pipe. Not work horses of my stable, but fine smokers all. This

morning I am smoking a compact little Chacom blast zulu, about the opposite of a churchwarden.

Sure, there are lots of posts about them here on the forums. Here's one: ]Wellington Pipes
They are not high quality pipes but can be had on the cheap from ebay and might be an alternative to the smaller bowl churchwardens. I'm referring to the "jumbo" size Wellingtons since they were manufactured in several sizes. Just sayin' I have both and generally prefer the large Wellingtons over the smallish churchwardens.

I have to say the style really isn't that attractive for me...but if they function as well as i've read they may be worth looking into. Particularly because of the convenience while reading or just relaxing.
