Never had that issue. It does have a topping that if puffed too quickly can lead to bite like many aromatics.
1.Possibly packing it too tight?
2. Cadence could be to fast?
3. Drying it out is not necessary, but could help... although the flavor could be depressed in this particular blend by doing so.

Maybe your body chemistry just doesn’t agree with this particular blend.
Although, not “chemical burn” Sleepy Hollow treated me with a mouth full of false burnt marshmallow. Others love it...it just wasn’t for me.

I haven't had Chatham Manor, but I do smoke Carter Hall pretty regularly. The Carter Hall burns my tongue almost everytime I smoke it. I'm assuming its the topping that does it. Moisture can turn into steam and burn you too. like Simmerdown said, maybe its packed too tightly. That will cause moisture and subsequently a burnt mouth.
Burley is the most likely to burn your mouth.
Be careful with yourself! You aren't missing anything.

Nope. It’s the PH of burley can cause chemical burns.
VAs can bite but it doesn’t stay with you like a Burley burn.
I agree with Brobs! Try drinking something acidic with your next bowl...sweet iced tea is my go-to for blends that do not agree with my pH. Hot tea works as well but I prefer cold drinks with my pipes.
I've heard no tongue bite complaints with the Midtown Series. I've not had tongue bite with burley much or at all. I have however had tongue bite and chemical burn with aromatic flavorings and moist aromatics especially. You might try drying the blend for a day or three in a container or bowl, smoking at a slower pace, or just shifting to non-aromatics to see if that is your sensitivity.
Unless it Mac Baren, then all bets are off.
I often have similar issues with many such blends - it's likely a combination of body chemistry, personal smoking habits, and the particulars of the blend.

Which is why many blenders case the shit out of it. Although I find pretty much any type of leaf can go rogue from time to time.
Sugar helps with tongue bite. I keep a bag of butterscotch discs next to my chair for that reason. Sugar cubes work, too.
I got tongue bite from Chatham Manor too. As I did from MB's London Burley. As I did from MB's Golden Extra. I guess burley just doesn't like me.
I bought a couple of ounces of this blend, having read it was a finer version of Carter Hall. I don’t know if I got a bad batch, but it was ashy and unpleasant.

I just bought a 2 oz sample of Chatham Manor and just smoked my first bowl of it. I really like the flavor and probably prefer it over Carter Hall, although I do like that as well. I experienced the bite though which is rather unpleasant. I tend to get bit by most of these types of tobaccos unfortunately. SWR and Half and Half were just brutal.
I've smoked about 2oz of Chatham Manor now and it's okay. I didn't get any burn but I did dry it out to about 50% of how it arrived. The key to this blend for me is a bit of dry time, a gentle pack and a very slow cadence.
