Beautiful job on the restoration!
Here's a bit more about the Newmarket shape. I believe it was introduced in early 1949. The advertising copy to the trade at that time noted:
We're proud of our Shape No. 58 --- the "Newmarket" --- because it's old world without being old-fashioned. The "Newmarket" is a faithful reproduction in finest matured bruyere root of the English Clay you'd have seen smoked by the "bucks" of a century ago. Those earlier smokers certainly knew all about pipe design, and now CHARATAN'S have pleasure in bringing the modern pipesmoker all the smoking comfort of a more leisurely age. The "Newmarket" is elegant without appearing ostentatious. Its tall chimney-like bowl combines cool, sweet, smoking, with the maximum economy of tobacco. The graceful curve of the stem minimises leverage on the teeth, and if we said it was as light as a feather we'd be exaggerating---but it weighs less than an ounce all the same ! We're making the "Newmarket" (and its little brother, Shape 57, the "Small Newmarket") in the following qualities---only trouble is, we can't turn the darn things out fast enough! (AND we make dozens of other equally attractive shapes).
De LUXE Quality (natural cross grain)
SPECIAL Quality (perfect specimens of natural cross (flame) grain)
SELECTED Quality (natural straight grain)
SUPREME Quality (natural straight grain---noting finer can possibly be obtained)
